Fiction Writing(how to start your novel)-The Plot Thickens
69Determining the best opening scenario for your fiction novel.
Now we have a little background information about our hero and heroine, character A and B respectively, from Character Development.
Now, we need to focus on building our storyline. You need to identify the beginning, middle(the climax), and resolution of the story. With the beginning of the novel, in mind, we need to identify the problems. The rest of the novel should be worming its way to the epic finale. We cannot approach the finale, without reaching our stories crossroad. That crossroad is the climactic point in the novel where our hero is faced with making a crucial decision. If he continues on one path, things look safe, and the other path is, seemingly, afflicted with one road block after another. Okay, so here is the time to set your sights on the direction you would like to see your story go.
Anything afterward will lead toward the resolution of our character's problems.
We will start by listing a couple things we have already ascertained from our characters.
1)Our two main characters are unhappily married. The wife has found happiness in the arms of her employer. She is content with her career, obviously. Her husband is also making strides with his career. We know this is the problem, our characters are having with one another.
2)The husband thinks getting ahead in his career will save his marriage, however their hours conflict so they do not see enough of each other.
3)The husband and wife truly do love one another, but they are stuck in a career rut. They fell in love with one another, the moment they saw each other.
4)The wife finds herself in a perilous predicament after overhearing her boss making plans to eradicate an associate. She ignores this fact, thinking he is just angry. However, when the associate turns up dead a week later, she realizes her danger. She does not realize her boss knew she overheard his conversation. Of course, her boss has her phones bugged to see what she will do. He makes it known he is watching her every move.
5)The boss uses their affair as a weapon against her, knowing her husband would never take the news of her affair llightly.
6)What is the wife to do? How does she find a solution? Will she even survive?
7)Her boss decides it's too great a risk to have her around. He decides to bury his secret permanently. Since he knows a little background about her husband, he decides to frame her husband.
That, my friends is an ideal opening for your fiction. This leaves off precisely at the right moment. This would be an ideal start of the climax.

This is a good guide to one writing approach. However, I think it's important to remember there are many different approaches to fiction writing. I've tried the methodical approach - character sketches, story arcs, etc, etc. - and it is a disaster for me.
I've discovered that I write a story to find out what happens. If I work out the resolution before I start, I completely lose interest in writing the story!

Thank you for posting this. I'll be back next time I get an idea for a story--maybe with your advice I could turn a story into a book...maybe.
