The system utility software are used for various purposes like disk cleanup, registry cleanup, registry defragment, better disk defragment, detailed system information, disk status check and more. But, after frequent use of such software, you may face certain consequences like slow or no shutdown using the Start button, slow startup or even User Profile corruption. User profile corruption generally occurs when you have made a lot of changes to the default setting of the operating system and the profile size is also large. In such situations you need to go for file recovery software.

  • A User Profile is a compilation of personal data associated with a particular user.

As a practical scenario, after the repetitive use of system utility software suites, you may lose Standard Buttons and Menu Bar ofWindows Explorer (especially due to registry cleanup). In another scenario, after logon you may also discover that all the settings and data files are gone and the desktop environment is back to the default one (viz. of Windows XP). This problem can be encountered in all Windows NT core versions (as Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7)

In the first case, you can easily solve the problem without loosing any data. To do that you need to manually backup all the important files as documents, pictures, music, videos and to a different drive as on a USB flash drive or another hard drive partition. The steps to solve the profile corruption problem are as follows:

For Windows XP users:

1.) Restart your computer into Safe Mode (by pressing F8 when the monitor goes blank during the reboot), select the Administrator account to login.

2.) Click on Start Button, Right Click on My Computer and select Properties (Alternatively Start > Run > sysdm.cpl).

3.) Click on the Advanced Tab, click on the Settings tab under User Profiles.

4.) Select your profile from the list and click on delete (provided that you have backed up all the data).

5.) Now, your user account is back to the default settings. So, you will be able to see the Standard Buttons and Menu Bar. Now, you can copy and paste the data from the file backup that you have created before. It is recommended to keep the data backup for any future issues.

For Windows Vista and 7 users:

1.) Same as Windows XP step.

2.) Click on the Windows button, Right Click Computer and select Properties

(Alternatively, Windows Key + R > sysdm.cpl)

Note 1: The Run prompt under the Start menu is not available by default in Windows Vista and 7, if you have not enabled it, you can go for pressing Windows Key + R at same time.

Note 2: If you receive any UAC (User Account Control) alerts, please click on the Continue tab

3.) to 5.) Same as Windows XP steps

In the second case, you should try to reboot the system using the Safe Mode option. If you still get the default desktop environment and are not able to find any files on the desktop or under My Documents, you should search for them using the Windows search. They get saved under the folders with the same names that is Desktop, My Documents under your User Account folder. If you are still not able to find your data, you need to go for File Recovery tools.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery 4 is the foremost and most feature-rich file recovery software. This file recovery application natively supports 185 diverse file types which can be further extended by adding hexadecimal and decimal header information. It supports 300 file types for RAW file recovery. The software is compatible with FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file systems. It supports Windows 7 (Currently in RC1), Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000.
