Start with your Goals
There's no point in planning if you have no goals. A goal could be as complicated as retirement or as simple as survival. You should come up with a goal for retirement such as when you want to retire and how much you want to have to spend. You should also have more short term goals such as to buy a new car or house, to save for school or your children's school, or even shorter such as for the upcoming vacation. Aslo make sure you save up an Emergency Fund to ensure your immediate security in case of unemployment.
Move on to a Plan
Next you need to make a plan to achieve these goals. When do you want to have this money saved by? How much do you need to save? How much will you have to save each year, each month, each week, each day? Be specific as you possibly can. The more specific you are, the closer you will get to achieving your goals.
Build your Budget
You need to have a budget in order to be successful with your goals. If your plan says you need to save $400 a month and you are spending all your money every month, how will you achieve your goals? You need to come up with a plan for spending each month. How much will you spend on your home, food, clothing, fun, etc.? You need to have this all planned out. Stick to your budget and you will have the amount you need saved.
Watch your Savings Grow!
As you begin to budget, you will see your savings account increase. The value of your 401K will grow as you continue to contribute. You will feel great and so much more safe as you build your financial standing. Don't give up, keep going!
