Broke With Few Options!
Broke With Few Options!

Whatever It Takes

In 1979, my first husband was history with the slamming of the front door, but the already past due mortgage wasn't. At the time, I had two young children, no job, and our credit was non-existent. Additionally, we were deeply in debt, with no family or friends who could help out. Somewhere in that character defining moment, I remembered my grandmother's own courage inspiring adage, "There are no sacred cows. In tough times, all you need is your WIT."

WIT in Grandma Daisy's survival dictionary, was a Depression era shorthand for "Whatever It Takes." In the month's that followed, it took selling my wedding ring, my other jewelry, most of my furniture, pawning my sewing machine, and living on fish sticks and macaroni and cheese - just to make that monthly house payment. I survived those financial tough times and other financial emergencies that followed in later years, and so can anyone else who keeps their wits about them!

In 2008, with skyrocketing gas prices, the decline of the U.S. dollar, ever-increasing basic grocery outlays, a mortgage crisis, and jobs fleeing our country, and well established businesses closing left and right - more and more everyday Americans -- are finding themselves with similar temporary financial emergencies.

For, if you keep your wits about you, when confronted with a financial emergency -- it can be "temporary" and not a permanent down-spiral for life. Not panicking, and quick action can solve a lot of financial problems from morphing into bigger problems and ruining your credit score and reputation. So, you wake up tomorrow and:

  • The company you've worked for, for years, shut down without notice;
  • You got fired;
  • Your spouse, significant other, or roommate flew the coop;
  • Your one and only car broke down and you have no savings and can't get to work without a car;
  • You had an financial emergency and you will be late on the mortgage or rent;
  • You have more bills than paycheck and credit collectors are hounding you day and night;
  • And the list goes on.......................

Just what do you do to dig yourself out of this hole? It's important today more than ever, to understand the many options of doing "whatever it takes" to get yourself out of a temporary financial disaster. Here is some beginning rules for raising cash quickly, that you may not have considered:

Where to Sell Collectibles and Small Electronics

Proven avenues for rapid unloading some collectibles and small electronics, is to sell them at pawn shops; buy, sell, and swap shops; or to dealers who advertise "items wanted". Keep in mind, when I say, "pawn shops" I am not suggesting that you pawn the item, I am suggesting that you sell the item. (More about pawn shops in another sidebar on this hub).

These methods will not get you the best price, but will get you instant cash. More time consuming and less reliable ways to unload them, is to put them on Ebay, Craig's List, Amazon.com or in consignment shops. These methods will take longer and if you are under a time crunch, may be your best bet.

Additionally, keep in mind, the fastest and most price effective way is to sell them yourself, at either a yard sale or at a local flea market.

Quick Sells

Rule #1-- Simplify your life by locating the fast cash you already own - by merely looking around your home for unnecessary "sacred cows" and begin decluttering your life:

  • First, collections of anything definitely qualify for this method of raising quick cash. Think about it, do you really need two hundred DVDs, CDs or any other collectible item?
  • Other items that fall in this category, are electronic games and electronic devices.
  • Other collectibles, art, and antiques can be taken to local antique dealers, who may or may not make you a reasonable offer.

Reflect in the context of a collection vs. a roof over your head, or being afraid to answer the phone due to credit collectors or further trashing your credit. Passionate collections can be reproduced or replaced afterwards, in better times. Holding on to "things" can cost you everything.

What Sells and Who Buys

It is also important to know what sells and understand who buys. Historically, guy stuff sells and men will fork over money for used items much easier than women, who would rather spend more at big box discount stores, than buy second-hand. Useful, everyday items can also be cash treasure troves in hasty cash accumulation. Items that sell well are:

  • Tools
  • Left over building material
  • Hardware
  • Fishing gear
  • Sporting gear
  • Hunting and camping equipment
  • Lawn and garden care equipment

Keep Simplifying

Rule #2 -- Simplify Your Life - Next, simplify further by stripping your home down to basics. Get rid of anything you do not use, do not need, does not have sentimental value, or can be easily replaced.

Price everything to sell, don't be bogged down by over-pricing, solely based on what you paid for the item in the first place or what you've seen others sell the same item for in the past. Having many items bargain priced to sell vs. pricing at what you've seen at other such sales, will net you the results you need.

Have the mother-of-all yard sales or garage sale, (if you have a good location). Advertise in free papers and with good readable signage. P.S. Don't forget to remove the signs after your sale, be a good neighbor.

If you don't have a good location, haul everything to the local flea market. Arrive early to select the best location for your booth, and make sure you have a helper.

Understand that, yes, you are may be taking some losses. However, losing your good credit, being hounded day and night by creditors, losing your home, or having your car repossessed is far worse, than losing small dollars.

In determining your asking price, think about overall volume vs. price of all the items you've selected to sell.

Local auctions are one way to liquidate!
Local auctions are one way to liquidate!

On the Auction Block

Rule #3 -- Another method of quick cash is to simply send everything to a local auction house. You'd be surprised at what a well attended auction can net. Things you would never dream that would sell, if the right two bidders attend, can bring far more than the value of the item.

Your auctioneer can advise you of what his typical bidder likes to buy in your area. A key to making sure you have a good auction sale, is to send everything in a clean, working condition to auction.

Make sure that you pick a good local auction house, one that draws a big crowd weekly, not one that just holds an auction once a month or so. Also, remember it will cost you in both auction fees and taxes.

The Short List of What Not To Do To Raise Fast Cash

This is the short list on what not to do to raise fast cash and why you should not use these methods if at all possible:

  • Predatory Lenders - Getting a loan against your home, other possessions, or you car is never ever a good idea. Why? Because if for some reason you can't make your payment(s) -- you could find yourself in foreclosure, or having your security for this loan repossessed. Far worse, you could end up owing much more than you ever borrowed.
  • Pawn Shops- First, the interest rates can be much more than 100% of what you borrow and quickly escalate the later you are on the payment. You have a time line when you pawn, meaning you could end up losing something valuable that you never intended to lose, just because you could make the payment. Still, worse, if you do redeem your treasured item -- you could end up paying more than twice what you originally paid for it, or could replace it for.
  • Advance Pay - This is a slippery slope that immediately affects your credit. When you borrow from these lenders, it does show up on your credit report. It doesn't matter that you repay this quick loan on time or only do this once. You need to think long and hard before you resort to this temporary financial fix in terms of how it will look to a lender in better times. They will look upon use of such a service as a sign of instability.
  • Get Rich Quick Schemes - Most get rich quick schemes, make big promises about big income for which you have to put forth little skill, time, or effort. Naturally, they are expecting you to fork over some amount of cash to get in on the ground floor. When your back is against the wall financially is no time to waste your time, thinking this is the answer to your prayers.
  • Credit Card Advances - This poor choice should be avoided. The fees and exorbitant interest rates, along with the fact that there generally is no grace period make them a huge pitfall that can further put you into financial ruin. They also are a black mark on your credit.
  • Borrowing From Your 401k- The true cost of borrowing from your 401k can be complex. First of all, there is such a thing as a repayment window, meaning you have to repay the loan within a certain time period. If, during that time period you should be fired, laid off, or quit -- there may be a hidden clause that dictates you must pay the balance remaining within 30-90 days. If you can't make the repayment within that time frame, you will be heavily taxed by the IRS on the remainder. You are borrowing from your future retirement and this should be a last resort source of solving any financial crisis.
  • Debt Consolidation- This method of raising cash is an epidemic in our country that can be directly linked to the current financial crisis and many foreclosures. Adding unsecured debit, such as credit card debt to your mortgage can spell financial ruin. There can be many hidden charges and dangers in arranging this sort of loan.
  • Cashing In Your Life Insurance - This is also a "think long and hard before you leap" last resort option. You may be taking a big loss and be taxed heavily for the quick cure.

Rule #4 - Get a part-time job or do some temp work - Don't hold out for the ideal situation, just go get one even though you know you won't need it for the long term.

Rule #5 - Public and Private Charities- While many churches and charitable organizations have a income cap, you can in an emergency, get a short term loan or gift. If your husband's disappeared and you've got kids and the electricity has been cut off, it's better to swallow your pride and ask for help than to allow them to suffer in the dark.

Rule #6 - Renting Out That Spare Room - Sometimes you've got extra room and this can be a simple solution. Getting security deposit and 1st month's rent upfront and having someone share the financial load on utility bills may be a sound financial answer to getting out of debt.

Rule #7 - Sell Your Plasma - This quick cash solution, has a hidden reward in knowing that you are also helping someone else. You can safely donate twice a week at a for-profit plasma center, which will give you roughly an extra $280 a month in income. Additionally, if you have been vaccinated against Hepatitis B you can get a higher rate of quick cash.

Rule #8 - Sell scrap aluminum and scrap metal- Not the easiest or the most glamorous way of raising cash, but it works.

Rule #9 - Sell that junk car- If you have an old clunker that is not worth reviving there are two things you can do. If you are handy with your hands you can part the vehicle out, selling parts, even the engine on Craig's list, etc. Then, you can call the many dealers who advertise "I Buy Junk Cars" and sell the carcass. Remember to shop around, as the going price for junk cars can vary greatly.

Rule #10 Cash In Your Vacation Pay and Work - Some employers will allow you to cash in your vacation pay and just not take the time off. Another way to handle this is to take the vacation, stay home, and work a temp job.

Finally, if your financial situation is serious and you need a lot fast cash, earnestly consider a quick sale of large ticket items, such as a boat, or an extra car, an ATV, golf cart, riding mower, or extra TVs, sound systems and the like.

Most Americans have far too many of such possessions and while they make life more enjoyable, they are expendable. It's a whole lot less embarrassing to not own such items, than to risk losing your home, having your car repossessed, or be hounded by credit collectors. In the end, you may discover as I did so many years ago, that starting with a clean slate and living debt free has its own rewards.

Hi Jerilee! Great hub! Many of the ways you listed can also be used to generate extra cash before things get financially desperate. Every so often, I check my place for items I no longer need or want. I then take them to a nearby flea market and sell them. WHile I do find that I often have to lower the prices of many items, I've always made money, even after figuring in the price of renting a spot for the day.

Also, on craigslist, one can also check the "gigs" section as well as the 'jobs' section.

Again, great hub!

I am in such a situation right now, no job, car just died, and I just told someone "I came into this world with nothing, and nothing is sacred except my life". I went through my house, and save for the essentials for living (basic cookware, etc), there is maybe only enough to fill one 10 x 10 room (family heirloom furntiure, etc.) that I can't, and won't sell in a heartbeat. My take is that getting it was the fun part, and now I've gotten my "money's worth" out of having it, so it should be someone else's treasure. My prodigal son, who is God knows where out in California, will be sad if he ever comes home to find out that I've sold all his stuff, but hey, I'm not a storage place!

You are so right! Hey, it's only "stuff." I'll try to follow up with more ways to raise fast cash. Unfortunately, years ago I had to go through a lot to gain a lot of wisdom. Good Luck!

Thanks! I think today's problems dictate that we've all got to do more to help each other. In my mind, if at all possible hubs should be both useful and entertaining.

Jerilee, I got here by following your Twitter link. It's a good hub to read if preparing for tough times.

It all sounds like good advice. We have lots of collections here: knicknacks, books, paintings, but I have no real understanding of the market for any of these items. If ever in the situation you describe, I would not know the first thing about liquidating assets.

I hope, though, that I might be able to make reasonable choices if the need arises.

Thanks Aya! I haven't started to do much with Twitter but plan to later this weekend as I've been thinking about what I want to do in that area.

When I was younger I made a lot of bad choices. I have also known a lot of people who had poor decision making skills, and others who just plain had unfortunate things happen in their lives that necessitated liquadating the "expendables" in life. They were all good lessons that I will never forget.

Less sometimes very often turns out to be "more."
