Find Your Perfect Bob Haircut: Variations on the Bob

During the 1920s, sassy women everywhere were bobbing their hair. Taking scissors to long, elaborate hairstyles was a celebration of idenpendence and self expression for these bold women. The short, practical style is said to have been inspired by Joan of Arc, but it took Louise Brooks to turn the bob into a mainstream fashion sensation. She was followed by other film stars like Clara Bow and Jean Harlow. When eternal fashion icon Coco Chanel embraced the bob, it was here to stay.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy sported a smooth, elegant bob in the 1960s and revitalized the fashion of the bob. Since then, women (and even men in the 1970s) have returned to the bob time and again for its versatility and ease. From conservative housewives to runway models, women love a bob.

The Straight Bob

It's hard not to compare Louise Brooks' classic style with the hairdo Katie Holmes was sporting in 2008. This go-to straight bob, with or without bangs or fringe is the choice for society women, celebrities, and soccer moms. Tucked behind one or both ears or left to fall on the cheek, it's a neat, conservative look. This style works best women with on natuarally straight hair. Your face shape determines what length works best.

The Angled, or Graduated Bob

Victoria Beckham brouht the angled bob back in a big way. From the front, this version looks much the same as a typical bob, but the back and side views are guaranteed to turn heads. The longer version of this is also called a swing. It's a nice option for women who want the illusion of longer, softer hair near the face, but also the convenience of keeping it short in back.

Modern Bobs

For those who want the look of a bob, but with a lighter texture, there's the razor bob, shown here on Rihanna. As you can see, it looks just as nice curly as it does straight.

The newest bobs are punk inspired and seem to nod to the 80s. Some liken Agyness Deyn's new cut to Dr. Spock, but if you look closely, you'll see similarities between it and Brooks' eye-catching style. Check out the striking color, strong lines, and pointy little edges. Look for this to be the hot hairstyle of 2009!

Fringes, platinum blonde shades, and cropped styles have all been big hair trends in 2008, and we're tipping Agyness' new look may just make it as a trend for 2009.

With all these choices, it's hard not to find a bob you like!

I like the short blond bob, like Crosby wore as Tasha Yar in The Next Generation. BT Evilpants would look good in that one!

I once had a graduate bob, many years ago.  I have very curly hair, you can imagine the results.  As soon as the salon styling was washed out, I had this big brillo pad on my head that was short in the back and hung down nearly to my chin at the sides.  I just could not make it look like the hairdresser did.  Could not wait for that to grow in!

Patty - are you sure this is the best style for B.T.?  I was thinking that he'd look really hot and stylin' in either an afro or shaved bald.  Really play up the antlers, ya know?

Great hub, Lela.

I remember when the bob was high fashion Coco Chanel, Edith Piaff in the sixties. Remember Purdey (johanna Lumley) from The Avengers. Great stuff. fashion seems to reprise over time. Bobs, miniskirts, Mini's (the car) Beetles (the car). clogs. tights, glove shoes. Great reminiscences for me.

BT in a bob!

great Hub!

They fit like a glove, Patty. Kid leather, no sole, soft, soft, soft. They had straps across the top. Soooo comfy! I tried to find a pic for you, but couldn't.

Hey Sixtyorso...did they have Water Buffalo sandals in South Africa? Man, I loved those! You had to soak them in water and then wear them for awhile so they sort of molded to your foot. They were the most comfortable things ever!

Patti Glove shies were like soft kidskin ballet slippers with no heels and elastic around the opening. When not on a foot they looked a bit like a wilted banana skin.

Nope Shirly no buffalo shoes! Sound great though!
