So, you’ve decided that it’s time to get a dog of your own. Finding the right canine companion is an important process, it can be tough, especially if you desire a pure-breed as your pet. While there are many honorable dog breeders, there are some that may not put your potential puppy’s health and happiness as his or her first priority. Luckily, there are ways to find a professional dog breeder that will provide you with a happy, healthy pet for life.

First, it is important to avoid what is known as a “backyard breeder.” Many of these less-professional breeders lack the knowledge, history and understanding of the particular breed they sell. This lack of experience and education can result in improper care and a less healthy, well-adjusted puppy. To avoid buying a dog from these types of breeders, do some thorough research to determine whether or not your potential seller has the proper background with your breed of dog.

A reputable breeder should be able to give you pertinent information about his or her puppies. This information should be mostly dealing with health, such as genetic diseases that your breed of choice may be susceptible to. For instance, a breeder of Labrador Retrievers should test for, at the very least, retinal dysplasia and tricuspid dysplasia - two common developmental diseases in this breed. It is most important that you do your own research on the particular breed of dog you wish to purchase before visiting a potential breeder. This way, you can quiz your puppy’s seller to see if he or she really knows as much as they should.

Upon visiting the breeder, It should be obvious that he or she has a genuine love for dogs. Through speaking with him or her and observing treatment of the puppies, it will become apparent whether the breeder is a dog-lover, or simply in it for the money. Furthermore, the breeder should offer his or her availability to answer questions about your pup after you’ve brought it home.

Aside from personal research, there are other documented ways to tell if your potential breeder is legit. A caring, professional breeder will have an updated certificate for an eye evaluation obtained from the Canine Eye Registration Foundation that ensures your potential pup does not have any genetic eyes diseases. The results of such an examination should be registered at the Canine Health Information Center so that you can obtain these results on your own.

Through doing your own research at home and doing some “field research” at your potential breeder’s sales site, you should be able to ensure that you bring home a happy, healthy, well-adjusted pup. One that will bring you great joy for years to come.
