Finding Room For Your Sewing Area And Getting Organized.

Finding Room
You can use an extra bedrrom, an office or part/whole of a basement. It depends on how much you are sewing and what you are sewing. If you are sewing garments you will need more room then if you are sewing crafts--which sometimes don't use alot of room. One important thing to consider is how much you are going to use that room and how often are you going to be sewing. If you are going to use it often then you might not want things that fold out of sight. Why? Because you will eventually get tired of putting it away and taking it down each time you go to use it.--The Ironing board and cutting boards are just a few examples of this.
If you are sewing garments you will need these things:

The Sewing Table
A sewing table.
This can be something simple or something elaborate. Simple ones that you can use are a piece of plywood on top of two saw horses. More elaborate ones would be home made sewing cabinets--similar to the ones they use in Home Ec classes in schools. I would love one of those, but don't have the room to put one in any room of my house! Get a cardboard cutting board at places like Walmart, Jo Anne' Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics or just about any place the sells fabric. These are premarked for a variety of things. When completely unfolded they are 2 yards, which is 72 inches. I have 2 or three of them. I use the back of one for things like paininting with fabric paints and then I cut one up for templates of large circles and other things that you may need something more solid then tissue paper that patterns are made of.
Body Double
If you wish to sew garments for yourself or for others then you will most likely want a Body Double. These are perfect for when you don't have the person in front of you to make necessary adjustments to the pattern or the garment. You can get simple ones with just the bust, waist and hip adjustments or you can get the most expensive ones with lots more functions on therm.
Pattern Storage
A place to store patterns. This can be fiie cabinets to what I use, an old dresser. Diningroom hutches and cabinets can also be used. Anything that has drawers high enough to hold a pattern--and you can store them laying down on their sides or upright--that choice is up to you.
Organizing
Organizers for your thread and bobbins, and other small items like needles, thread, bobbims, measuring tapes, seam rippers, sizzors (all kinds of them), marking pens, seam binding, elastic, zippers and other things that you will accumulate. These can be things such as stackable plastic storge containers up to dressers. I use a variety of things. The best things for smaller items like your needles and pins and such is just a Workshop cabinet, the kind that holds nails and other small items.. They come in many sizes with many see thru drawers. You can hang them on walls or stack them. I wouldn't go very elaborate only if yu plan on showing your room off. Whatever works for you and your lifestyle.

Ironing Board and Iron
An Ironing Board and a GOOD working Iron.
You will want one that has steam as some materials will do better if using steam to press them. You can get ironing boards that fold up into a wall cabinet to ones that are free standing. This would depend on your space and how much you plan to use it.

Fabric Storage
Fabric Storage.
You can use shelves for the things that you have on bolts. Sometimes the fabric store will allow you to keep a bolt or the cardboard that the fabric was on when you bought it. If not, just get a box and cut it to half the size of the width of the fabric. For smaller pieces and scraps you can use large bins-like Rubbermaid Storage Bins. You could also use the children's storage bin compartments like you find at Lowe's with the many colored bins.

Washer and Dryer
Washer and Dryer.
You already use this for your laundry. Some fabrics need washing before you ever pin on a piece of pattern. Some material will shrink so you would want to wash that several times and dry it to get the most shrinkage you can before you put your garment together. You don't want it to shrink in all the wrong places after you have already spend a few hours on it. Once it does that you can't repair it. Some fabric will bleed--meaning the color will come out. Not all of it, just enough that it will bleed or stain other pieces of fabric lik something that you wash with it. Purchasing fabric and the care and instructions will be in another lesson.
Have Fun!
Be creative with your room. See what budget you have and then shop around. You can get lots of things from Antique shops, Flea Markets and Yard Sales.
Take measurements of your room or area and then draw a floor plan of it and see what will fit where and how. Make use of walls and closets too.
Decorate it in your style, Make your own window coverngs and the like.
