Finding a good Restrauant in a strange town
53A Delicious Secret in Napa CA.
Having purchased Shell Vacation Club Points in Hawaii, my wife and I received 2 nights and 3 days in San Francisco. We extended our time and too a side trip to Sonoma and Napa CA for some wine tasting. We were staying at the Silverado Resort (my wife said I should have used SVC to book our accommodations [Strike one]) and were looking for a place to eat. Just having come from an owners update in San Francisco we had some Gift Certificates to use so we tried one of the suggested restaurants and they were full {strike two}. We made reservations for the next night (ball one). As we were walking to the car I suggested that we ask the ladies in this little dress shop near by (ball two). I no sooner got the words out of my mouth when one of the ladies said "you have to go to Pasta Prego, it is my favorite and you will love it", as she is using speed dial to call them and made a reservation for us. The other lady was busy getting direction from map quest for us. This was a ball three. As we drove there we were thinking what kind of a place could this be if it is in a strip mall near a McDonalds?
Facing a full count and everything riding on walking into the restraint we went in. We looked and it was a nice little place, the tables were clean with white linens and what appeared to be a friendly staff. We looked at the menu the hostess told us it would be a few minutes but we could sit at the bar. The server brought us water right away and the waitress came over and started to talk to us about the specials and then left us to talk about it and decide. (I might make it out of this inning yet) On the Menu they had both pasta and meat dishes. I choose the Fettuccine, with sautéed chicken breast, Prosciutto, Fresh Peas, and a Garlic Cream Sauce. My wife was more daring and tried the Risotto with pesto, marinated and smoked chicken. She also had a glass of wine. Where we were sitting at the bar you could see the Chief preparing the meals with four burners going it was a show worth watching. I had Cheese Cake on an Oreo Crumb Crust with Baileys Cream sauce to go. Several times the waitress came back to check on us and to chat about the area and things to do. Now the final pitch, she brought the bill. It was a home run, a great meal, friendly people and a comfortable place and the bill was under $50.00. From what we had seen most meals were running $30 to $40 per meal with some charging close to that for the entrée and the sides are extra.
As we were eating I noticed that there were no empty tables and there were people waiting to be seated. The staff did not stand around they were busy. They had worked us in and treated us like a special guest (at least that is the way I felt).
