If you are in the process of choosing even the right Harley Motorcycle Helmet, then you must first consider safety. You want the helmet to at least be DOT approved. Although some of those helmets with all the flames and skulls look great, but many of them are not DOT approved and offer no protection at all in the event of a crash. You really should be prepared to pay a few dollars more for your safety as your life is definitely worth the extra cash. In fact, you can even get a safer helmet if it has the more stringent Snell certification. The Snell Memorial Foundation published a list of standards that have to be met in order to be Snell certified. While it is definitely safer, it will also add to the cost of the helmet.

One of the most critical steps in picking a helmet is obviously trying it on for size. The helmet’s effectiveness and safety are in a lot of ways dependent on having a good fit. If you happen to find a style or design that you like, but the fit is not quite right, then you may be able to rectify that with padding options. Often times, you can adjust the fits by adding or changing padding inside the helmet.

There are two basic primary styles of helmets that are offered on the market:

The first one is the Open Face Motorcycle Helmet.  These are very popular with scooter riders these days. They do not offer as much protection as do other types of helmets, but because of their popularity, manufacturers are producing some extremely fashionable designs. Open face helmets have also become popular with riders of cruiser style bikes and classic riders. However, most open faced helmets do not offer any eye protection so you should plan on buying a decent pair of motorcycle sunglasses to protect your eyes from the elements.

The other basic style is the Full Face Motorcycle Helmet. This type of helmet provides the most protection of all any type. As the name implies, these helmets provide protection for your face, not just your head. These are popular with all types of motorcyclists as there are all kinds of colors and paint jobs to suit all tastes

In the end, a good helmet should be well built and provide great protection of your head in event of an accident. It should greatly reduce injuries and fatalities in motorcycle accidents, thus many countries have laws requiring acceptable helmets to be worn by riders. After all, helmets have been shown to save the lives of motorcyclists and prevent serious brain injuries. Twenty states and the District of Columbia require motorcycle helmet use by all riders and their passengers.
