The Lovely Art Of Fingerwaving

What is a finger wave you ask? Well, I will tell you, gather around boys and girls. Once upon a time when I attended "beauty school" as the only foreseeable way to graduate from high school in 1981, I was forced to learn the fine art of finger waves. Of course it was 1981 and all of the girls in class were interested in one thing, well besides boys ....big hair! not the soft, close to the head S waves so popular in the 1920s and 1930's. In fact it seemed awfully barbaric that our teachers (Mr. Joe, Miss Sally and Miss Betty) were so insistent that we force our hair and our mannequin heads (who we like to refer to as manniheads) into such a contrary hairstyle. You see, we had dreams back then. Our hair longed to reach the sky and stay there with as much product available. How dare they steal our adolescent hopes and dreams.

As it turns out today I have come to appreciate this romantic hairstyle. Whats not to love about those delicious soft golden curls worn by Roxie Hart (Rene Zellweger) in the 2002 movie Chicago? Some other names known for their marcel waves include a young Bette Davis, Mae West, Mary Pickford, and Norma Shear to name a few. More recently Katherine Heigl, Rhianna and Kate Bosworth have been seen sporting these vintage inspired curls on the red carpet.
