Fire is a danger to humans around the world.  Knowledge and practicing prevention is key to maintaining safety for home and community.  Are you aware of the available fire safety products?

I am sure we have experienced the pain of a minor burn from the stove, a hot pot, iron or even a hair curling iron! Can you imagine this pain over the entire or part of the body? Pain is stimulated by special receptors with the primary purpose of protection.  Our internal warning system that tissues are getting damaged and transmits the message for a person to remove themself from the source.

Fires are known to cause millions of dollars in property damage and cause death therefore the importance of practicing and learning fire safety.  As we know, fire is caused with three main elements - oxygen, heat and fuel. We do our best to keep them separated especially fuels such as paper and wood or other combustible items.

A few products that are in use and available are fire retardants.  These are designed to slow the spread of fire and provide the opportunity for people to escape quickly and safely plus assist the fire department to overcome the fire.

A couple products is called Type X or Type C drywall and recommended to being used between apartment corridors and units and between home and garage.  It is designed to withstand flames for a certain period of time acting as a firewall allowing for extra time for people to escape safely.  Times will vary depending upon the thickness of the drywall applied and will be more costly but the peace of mind in fire safety is well worth the price.

A new product on the market was discovered when a wet and soggy diaper didn’t get burned.  Upon investigation and research it was found certain chemicals in the diaper were fire retardant with superior effect.  This same chemical is used in a product called Barricade which is a Fire Gel retardant.  It is sprayed on the exterior of homes and used in wild fires by fire fighters, to help stop spread of a fire for up to eight hours. Amazing product, don’t you think?!

A few other products are coatings that are applied by paint or spray and one popular item is called Flametard. It provides a coating and acts as a barrier against flames for a set period of time, once again, allowing for people to escape safely. Others have even installed water sprinkler systems in their homes.

Flame retardants do not provide full protection against fires but are designed to help increase the time needed, for people to escape safely and help our firefighters. After all, our material belongings can be easily replaced but not lives. Which is important to you?

Practicing and learning fire safety management whether at home or work should be a priority for everybody. Procedures and plans should be reviewed and updated regularly since people in a panic can easily forget. Ensure your family and staff know and practice such fire safety rules as the following ;

– Report, call the fire department. Press the fire emergency alarm.
– Escape route, have a escape and meeting route outlined.
– Fire Extinguisher, ensure you have the proper TYPE and WORKING fire extinguisher.
– Inventory, look and separate possible fire hazards that are together.
– Electrical, check all extension cords. Replace frayed or hot cables. Remove hazards. Do not overload and have good ground connections.
– Flammable substances, store properly. Use in well ventilated areas. Avoid static electricity.
– Smoke alarm, ensure they WORK and placed throughout the home.

Burns to the human body causes great pain, disfigurement and can also lead to death from infection to the exposed delicate tissue.
