Firey Car Crash in Brookline, MA
61Elderly Man Dies, Others Injured
A fiery car crash in Brookline has left one person dead, another in critical condition and 5 others with minor injuries. The crash occurred just before 5pm at the intersection of Harvard and Babcock Streets in Coolidge Corner at the hight of afternoon rush hour.
According to witnesses, an elderly man was speeding on Harvard Street and crashed into a Lexus SUV that was illegally parked. The Lexus rolled over several times crashing into another SUV containing 5 children and their mother almost 40 yards from the initial impact. The youngest child in this vehicle was a 6 month old baby who was miraculously not injured severely. The baby was taken to the hospital and kept overnight for observation. The other 4 children and the mother received minor injuries and were treated and released.
Brookline Police Captain John O'Leary stated that the Lexus exploded into flames after striking the third vehicle and briefly trapping the 52 year old woman operating the SUV. Several bystanders and employees from stores ran to the crash with fire extinguishers while others worked to free the occupants of all vehicles involved. The woman in the burning vehicle is now in critical condition at a Boston hospital and the 79 year old man operating the first vehicle that caused the crash died at the hospital. Police investigators state there were no skid marks to indicate the man tried to slow down and the crash remains under investigation.
