Congratulations! It’s your one year anniversary!

Congratulations! It’s your one year anniversary! If you’re still married then you’re in the half of the population that can still claim wedded bliss. Granted it’s only been a year… But seriously, congratulations! Now it’s time to celebrate the anniversary of the day you and your spouse committed yourselves to each other. If you’re following the traditional timeline of anniversary gifts, year one is paper. At first glance that might not sound like much of an exciting gift, but in fact paper is one of the best gifts because it lends itself to so many options.

The obvious paper that comes to mind is cash, but honestly, it seems a bit classless to give your spouse cash for your anniversary. He or she might find it odd to find a twenty between the folds of the special card you’ve chosen. So, while people typically appreciate cash for gifts, now is not the time to pull a bill out of your wallet. It will only appear as though it is for lack of any other gift.

A great paper gift is a well thought out gift certificate. If your spouse enjoys being pampered then a gift certificate to a spa is a welcomed treat. If your spouse enjoys golfing on weekends, a gift certificate for a round of golf is a big splurge. If he or she enjoys books and reading, a gift certificate to a bookstore would be appreciated. A clotheshorse would love a gift certificate to their favorite clothes store.

There is only one gift certificate that is superior to those mentioned above and that is a gift certificate that encourages the two of you to spend time together. Find a concert that you think the two of you will enjoy together and book a hotel near the concert. If you both enjoy sporting events, purchase tickets to a football game or minor league baseball game and plan to buy a foam finger and hot dog when you get there. Gift certificates that can be redeemed together is in keeping with the spirit of the event you’re celebrating; an anniversary you achieved together.

Another great paper gift is an inspiring book that you think your spouse would read cover to cover. There are many “feel good” books on the market that talk specifically about love and relationships; this would be a romantic option.  Is artwork considered paper? Whether or not it is, a piece of artwork makes a great gift for the significant other in your life. If neither of you have an eye for art, you can ask an art connoisseur for help in choosing a tasteful piece. Choose wisely as the art will likely hang on a wall in your home.

The final paper gift option is one that comes from the heart. Put pen to paper and write a poem to the love of your life. Recall reasons why you married him or her, share memories of your year together and declare your undying love for your spouse. You don’t have to be a poet to give this gift – the point of the poem is to show emotion and sincerity.

All of the gifts described above would be appropriate and appreciated when celebrating a one year anniversary. Be sure to ask your spouse beforehand if you have a spending limit; it might be awkward if she buys you front row tickets to Sting and you hand her a short, albeit sincere, poem.
