Fishing the solitude stream

Some aspects of fishing are simple. If you want everyone to fish, move the fish.

If you want native fish, the people must move.

That is why you see fish and game stock streams and rivers beside roads and camp grounds.

You will have to climb hard and steep to reach a native fishing hole, where the water is cold and clear.

These spots usually contain Brook trout which hide under over hanging branches and make every cast almost impossible.

Here you must crawl on your hands and knees, and sometimes elbows to fish a good hole.

Then when you present your fly you will have to dabble it on the water surface hoping to get a strike as the area is so tight you cannot cast into the stream. You will not be fishng with a pole over 6 feet in lenght either.I have fished many streams this way in California,Idaho and Montana with great results.

You will not be packing a vest or any thing that will get tangled in the brush. All you need is a break down fishing pole of 4 joints which fits in a bag to carry it.Carry your lures in a plastic container which will fit into your pocket.

Wear quick dry pants and wading shoes, preferablly with felt bottoms.Wear drab clothing without shiny buttons and such.

A fishs blind spot is from behind, that is why l fish upstream, because the fish faces towards the current waiting for food to come to it.

Your cast has to be surgically precise to hit those little holes. You have to keep your shadow out of the water and make no movements which will notify the fish you are there.

You will get tangled in the brush several times, but do not get discouraged as a catch of a nice fish will make your day.

When I approach a hole I try to hide behind a tree or rocks and drop my bait into the eddy and let it drift down towards the fish.If a fish is there it will usually take your the bait immediately.

Most of my flys are tied on a #14 hook and they consist of standard paterns such as the Adams,Pale Evening duns and Royal Coachmen.

If I spot the trout I will present it above the fish and let it drift in front or to the side.

Let the fly drift around rocks, under brushy spots and dap it up and down to make a fish think it's real. You will be surprized what a little dapping can do to a hungry fish.

Most fish are hooked within 15 feet of the fisherman, from my experience anyway.

There are obvious pools, ripples or pockets in a stream even a beginner will recognize as a likely home for a trout.

However the beginner passes up possible catches by rushing from pool to pool.

It doesn't take much water to hold a Brookie and by passing a good hole you can pass up a big one.

As I said before if you want to be in solitude and catch native trout, you will have to climb high and steep.

When leaving a camp site for a days fishing,I will follow a trail up or down the stream, without fishing until the trail peters out. This is where I will start fishing as most people don't venture much past a 1/4 mile up or down stream and your biggest chance to catch that lunker will start here.

 Good Luck;

Good Hub. I live on the lake in Alabama and love to fish. I wrote a hub today about noodle fishing. I can tell you are a big fisherman. I just wish I could catch a bass sometimes.

This is the first hub today and what a way to start, Years ago I used to fish and in fact I used to make a reasonable living from tying flies for our local fisherman. loved the video, brought back a lot of fine memories, thank you.
