Getting rid of your spare tire and staying in shape

Why is it we put on all this extra weight?  And more importantly how do you get rid of it and keep it off?

In this article, I’m not going to waste you time with a bunch of stats and free weights this, nautilus that.  Instead, we’re going to get right to the meat of it (double entendre, get it?)  So let’s dive into the first thing needing to be addressed – fact vs. fiction

Fact – all diets work. Fiction – all diets work wonders.

Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has addressed his weight time and again.  As he’s told his audience countless times, he’s done every diet out there from SouthBeach, to Adkins, to Weight Watchers, et cetera, et cetera.  And he found that every single one of them worked.  He lost weight on each diet, though result times were different, he nevertheless lost weight.

The trick of course, was keeping that weight off.  Once he went off the diet or strayed, the weight came back – shocker! So back to the diet or on to another he’d go, lose weight and once off again, again the weight came back…moving from measuring calories to carbohydrates, saturated fat, avoiding starches and fried foods.

But after years of “yo-yo” dieting, he came upon the secret of weight loss:  portion control. What a panacea!  Who would have ever imagined that portion control would be a cornerstone of weight loss and control?  So, it’s not about what you eat so much as is it about how much you eat.

Thought the conservative endorses portion control, he laments exercise, and for this article and its aim, here’s where we part.

Another reason you’ve got that spare tire around your midline is lack of exercise.  No, this is not about rock-hard washboard abs and a tight derrière; it’s about being in reasonably good shape and health.

So, dust off the bicycle, or pull the mask and snorkel out of the garage and get active!  Take a kickboxing or karate class, play tennis or volleyball, but add a low or medium cardiovascular impact to your lifestyle.

Keep your splurges in moderation, your meals at scheduled times, exercise a couple of times a week and you’ll be surprised what a little exercise and sensible eating habits will accomplish.
