Fitness ideas for travelers

I lead a busy life and have consequently spent a lot of my time on the move. Keeping fit and eating healthy has always been important to me. Working out at an aerobic (with oxygen), rather than anaerobic (without oxygen), level will help you burn body fat. You can walk, jog, run, bike, swim, dance, or do almost anything aerobically. In an anaerobic state, your body burns more sugar (its energy store) than fat and adds stress to its already overloaded systems. The most useful and least expensive way to ensure that your exercise level stays in the aerobic zone is to use a heart-rate monitor.
Tips!
Some tips I recommend when preparing to leave for your trip:
- Have a really good sleep before the trip. Pack your luggage well in advance so that you will not be in hurry at the last minute, wasting your energy levels.
- Drink plenty of water before leaving. Alcohol and cocktails will only dehydrate you further. Humidity levels in the aircraft will be less than 10%. So water is the best.
- Time your sleep correctly. Once you board, get the local time of your destination and set your watch accordingly. If it is night time, wear blindfolds and sleep.
Pocket personal trainer
I downloaded this great workout called iTravel for Women and it's awesome! You download it onto your iPod or MP3 player, and you can listen to it as many times as you want whenever you want. It's available online for around $20. It's just like having your own personal trainer in your pocket. It allows you to keep up with your workout routines while your away from home. It is difficult to stay in shape on the road but these workout can be done without any type of equipment. So you can stay in shape even if your hotel doesn’t have a gym. These are the components:
Day 1: iTREAD Outdoors + iSCULPT Ballet
Day 2: iTREAD Outdoors + iSTRENGTH@home
Day 3: iSCULPT Ballet + iSTRETCH Meditation
Day 4: iTREAD Outdoors + iSTRETCH
Day 5: iSTRETCH Athletic 20 Min + iSTRETCH Meditation
I found it to be an enjoyable cardio routine to help me maintain fitness while on the go.
Exercises you can perform in hotel room for total body fitness
These are some of my favourite exercise:
Cobra or back extension: Lie on your stomach as if you are ready to perform push ups. Keep your hands on the side. With your palms facing downwards and fingers pointed upwards. With your hands, push your torso to lift off the floor. Keep your pelvis on the floor and your head looking ahead. Hold and then release. Repeat this three times. Don’t tilt your head back to look at the ceiling as it puts strain on your neck.
Crunch for lower abdominals: Lie flat on your back and bend your knees. Cross your arms over your chest. Tighten your abdomen, squeeze your buttocks and push your lower back into the floor. Hold for ten to twenty seconds breathing normally. Relax and then release.
Hurdler’s stretch: Bend your knee towards the front and tuck your lower leg in toward the opposite thigh. Stretch gently toward the straight leg without bouncing. This is like ballet movement.
Yoga: You can also perform yoga while traveling or in the hotel room. If you have a yoga mat, it is enough to perform yoga. Don't forget to wear loose clothing while performing yoga.
Book Ideas
I read Workouts for Dummies a few years ago and in there there was a section in there for keeping fit while traveling. This suggested a great workout kit that they called an "Exercise Bar". These can be used as a fitness tool to use when you're on the road. They recommended making your own or purchasing one from a fitness outlet. Your "Exercise Bar" should be made to be versatile, allowing you to work out both your upper and lower body by doing exercises, such as squats, leg lifts, shoulder presses, rows, and arm curls, among other things. It also suggested including workout equipment such as bands, abdominal balls, jump ropes, and lightweight dumbbells are all also portable and could easily fit in your suitcase during your travels. You can buy these from fitness stores or make one up yourself with your favorite equipment.
