When you are using a dog training collar on your dog, you will want to make sure that the collar is fit onto the dog correctly; otherwise it will be of little use. Those dog owners who have problems with these types of collars usually have them because the collar is not placed properly on the dog. Use these instructions to properly fit your dog with a remote training collar.

The training collar looks very much like an ordinary dog collar but contains a receiver. This is where the dog will receive stimulation from you when you are training him on the field. The receiver must be placed in a certain way or else it will be of little use.

Step One - Understand the collar

Take a good look at the collar and locate the receiver. The collar has a buckle and several holes where it can be fastened. The receiver is easily located and has a light on the device. The light should face upwards so that it heads towards the nose of your dog. The receiver end of the collar is very hard to miss as it is thicker than the rest of the collar.

Step Two - Check The Stimulation Charger

This is located under the collar and should be snug against the underneath of your dog's neck. While the receiver will pick up the transmission, it will then transfer the stimulation to the charger located against the bottom of his neck. It is very important that the charger makes contact with your dog's skin.

Step Three - Tighten The Collar

Dog training collars are not meant to be worn by a dog continuously, but are used to train the animal when you are in the field. They do not replace a regular dog collar as they are worn tighter than the ordinary collar. After you have the receiver and charger in place, you should then buckle the collar so that it fits snugly against your dog. Do not put your fingers under the strap as you tighten the collar as it may cause the collar to be too loose.

Different dogs have different sized necks, therefore, you do not want more than three inches of excess strap on the collar. If you have a D-ring on your collar, you should slip the excess through the collar. This is a better alternative than snipping the excess strap in case you ever want to use it for another dog. You can also adjust the receiver and the charger on the collar so that they fit correctly around your dog's neck. Remember to keep the receiver pointing out, towards the nose of your dog, so that it can pick up the signal. And the receiver should be always snug against the bottom of the neck.

Remote dog training collars are not meant to be worn for a long period of time as they can irritate your dog's skin. In order to prevent this, you should remove the collar after 8 hours out of every 24 when you are training your dog.
