Guitar Lesson: Five Chords for Acoustic Guitar
68Five Basic Guitar Chords For a Beginner
If you're just beginning guitar and you're anxious to start learning chords (that is multiple notes played together) then there are five basic chords that I recommend you learn. Remember this acronymn: C-A-G-E-D as in C-chord, A-chord, G-chord, E-chord, and D-chord.
Why should you learn these five to start with? I recommend these five guitar chords for two main reasons. One reason is that there are many "three chord songs" that are great guitar songs, which employ one or more of these chords. I find that when I am giving guitar lessons, the student will maintain interest if I can give some chords to learn along with the basic techniques. That way it minimizes boredom, and the student will want to play more. The second reason for learning these five chords is that they form five basic chord shapes which can be modified to make many other chords later on and will give a better understanding of the fretboard and formation of more complex guitar chords.
Below are the chord diagrams showing you the fingering of the chords. On the diagram the following symbols in use: O - open string, 1- first finger, 2 - middle finger, 3- ring finger, 4 - pinky finger. This shows you which finger to use on certain frets. You can also watch the video below on how to make the C, A, G, E, and D chords.

The next chord after the ones listed is the dreaded Fmajor. Maybe it's worth mentioning the common minor chords as well as most songs use 7ths and minors
