Five Funny Football Movies

Football movies don’t really appeal to me. If I had to choose between a football flick and any other kind of movie, I’d probably pick any other kind of movie. However, there are some football movies I like—the funny ones. I love comedies more than any other kind of movie, so I can look past the football part. Here are the five funniest football movies I’ve seen. There are plenty more out there, so please feel free to tell me which ones you would choose in the comment box at the bottom of the page.

I turned 18 in 1998 when this movie came out, and Adam Sandler was a favorite among my friends. His humor is still my cup of tea. I worked at a movie theater for about three days—which happened to be the weekend this movie opened in theaters. It was craziness! I have never seen such a rowdy audience. When I went to see the movie myself, people snuck in beer and had a party. It was truly insane, but fun.

Anyway, back to the movie. Adam Sandler plays Bobby Boucher (pronounced Boo-shay), a stuttering waterboy for the University of Louisiana Cougars. Bobby has a temper from all of the teasing he gets, as well as his mom’s over-protectiveness. Poor Bobby ends up getting fired because the players spend more time teasing him than practicing football.

Bobby ends up volunteering as the waterboy for South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs—where the new coach encourages Bobby to stand up for himself. Well, I don’t want to give the entire story away in case you haven’t seen it, but there is a lot of action on the football field along with a lot of humor.

The Longest Yard (2005)

Wait, another Adam Sandler movie? I told you I like the guy, so you shouldn’t be surprised. This remake got me laughing, and reminded me of why I enjoy Adam Sandler’s humor. Basically, a professional football player gets sent to prison. He ends up leading a team of prisoners in a game against the guards.

There are a lot of funny scenes, but there is also some serious stuff (or it would just end up being a bit Three Musketeers-ish). I found the movie slowed down a bit during the serious football playing, but the rest was pretty funny. If you aren’t a fan of Adam Sandler, you should just pass on the movie.

This football movie spoofs all of the other inspirational sports movies. It would just be another football team full of misfits in a small Texas town movie, if it weren’t for the fact that the movie makes fun of other movies. Who doesn’t love a movie that makes fun of stuff? You know it is going to be over the top, so go with it.

As with all the other sports movies, the team comes together and actually has a chance against its rival in the big game. Will the best team win? Who is the best team? Only watching the movie will provide you with the answers.

The Replacements

A football movie with Keanu Reeves has to be funny. If it isn’t funny, at least you know it will be so stupid that you have to laugh. This movie was released in 2000, but based on the 1987 professional football strike.

Basically, with the professional players on strike, the team’s owner finds a bunch of scab players—naturally they all suck. The misfits end up coming together, and there is even a romance with the head cheerleader. Ooh la la.

Wildcats

This movie is about a woman who ends up coaching an inner-city high school football team. By the way, Goldie Hawn is in the movie as the female football coach. See? It is funny…probably because you are picturing the rich bitch Goldie Hawn plays at the beginning of Overboard, aren’t ya?

Anyway, you have to appreciate the humor in this movie: a goat gets stolen, a teenager gets wasted at a party and is rescued by Wesley Snipes, and cheerleaders chant, "U-G-L-Y, you ain't got no alibi, you UGLY! What-what! Yo' mama says you ugly!"

Goldie Hawn’s character works hard to get the team to both respect her and play well, but will she succeed? You have to watch the movie to find out.
