My Favorite Movie Roles
59These choices are of course my opinion only and are not in any way meant to be anything more than entertaining.
After writing my original draft of this hub, I have since decided to add one more actor but not because of just one specific role but because of many. I do have several favorite choices though, and will write a little about each one. I'm talking of none other than the icon and legend, John Wayne.
Fiddle . . Dee . . Dee . .
Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind definitely makes my list as number one. She's the ultimate spoiled little rich girl who gets a good dose of reality. Of course, through all her manipulating and scheming and no matter who she hurts, she really doesn't know how to be any other way. I don't think any actress could have played the part better than Ms. Leigh. She's spoiled, selfish and yet tough as nails when she needs to be. She has an inner strength that few possess. Her wardrobe fits her well, my two favorites are the red sequined dress and of course the green dress made from the curtains.
There have been many spoofs of the green curtain dress but I have to say the one that Carol Burnett did on her show is the best.
In my own little world, I've often dreamt of being Scarlett. She's a vixen, sexy siren and in the end, you know she'll get her way (even Rhett), but in reality, I would more than likely end up the Carol Burnett spoof.
Fasten Your Seatbelts, It's Going To Be A Bumpy Night
Bette Davis in All About Eve is wonderfully sarcastic, witty, sexy, and at her best. The party at which she utters this classic line is my favorite and the dress she is wearing makes the scene that much better. Ms. Davis portrays a middle aged stage star continuing to play roles for a much younger actress. Enter, Eve! A seemingly naive young woman who only wants to be able to bask in the presence of her idol. However, Margo and her friends soon realize that Eve is anything but naive. The scene towards the end of the movie where Eve is accepting her award as Margo realizes that what she really wants is to be a wife and end her stage career is a pivotal moment in Margo's life. She has grown up.
Ms. Davis is a legend and her earlier films I believe are her best work. She was a beautiful and talented actress that few today can compare.
Etc. , Etc., Etc., . .
I love the movie The King and I. There have been several versions over the years but none as good as the version with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. The chemistry these two great actors have is incredible. I believe I developed a major crush on Mr. Brynner after seeing this movie and it still exists today. He was so handsome and few men can make being bald so sexy. Mr. Brynner's portrayal of the King is outstanding. He can be demanding, bossy (he is king afterall), and yet funny and even loveable. The dance sequence between Anna and the King before the dinner party is my favorite. The way Mr. Bynner could say "Anna" made me want to change my name.
The changes in the King over the course of the movie are moving and yet sad for you soon realize there can be only one outcome and the old must make way for the new.
The Duke
Needless to say, I'm a huge fan of John Wayne and his movies. During his lifetime, he starred in over 200 movies. I haven't even come close to seeing them all, but I do try to watch a new one when I find it. Information regarding his personal life is limited, there are several books about him but he never wrote his autobiography. He was married three times and is the father of seven children. Several of whom appeared in some of his movies.
The Quiet Man
When one first thinks of John Wayne, the last thing you think is of a quiet man. I would have to say that this is probably my favorite film. The story of a man trying to leave his painful past behind him and start fresh in a place that has a special meaning for him. He finds love in the form of a fiery red head played by Maureen O'Hara. In her, he's met his match in spirit and fiestyness and she gives him a good run for the money. The on-screen chemistry between Wayne and O'Hara makes their story that more believable. John Wayne not only shows his tough side in the movie he is also actually great in the funnier scenes.
True Grit
The story of a US Marshall who unwittingly gets roped into helping a young girl find and bring justice to the man who killed her father. Frontier justice at its best. My favorite scene is the climax of the film and who could forget the now famous lines he would speak.
"Fill your hand, you son of a bitch!", and reins in his teeth, charges at them firing with both guns.
This is the only movie for which John Wayne would receive the academy award for best actor.
