Television-The Advertising Whore
64
The average American is subjected to 247 television commercials daily. If you leave your house, surf the net or listen to the radio, you are the victim of 600 or more advertisements a day. That includes billboards and handmade roadside signs. That's a lot of visual and audio solicitation. No wonder our country suffers from "purchaser disease" and I have yet to see a commercial for a cure for that.
Children from the ages of 8 to 12 viewed the most commercials for fast food, sugared cereal, candies, chips, fast foods and sodas than any other demographic. The leader of these ads is Disney, MTV, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. The situation only gets worse during the Christmas season with toy, software and DVD ads.
During the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. adults are exposed to accident insurance companies and college commercials an average of 75 to 100 times a day. Cleaning products come in third with pharmaceutical ads coming in fourth place.
Networks, Bravo, Hallmark and Oxygen show commercials promoting their own shows an average of 30 times an hour. Some of their commercials are shown three times back to back. Other networks average 15 times an hour. The major networks have more advertisements for other products besides their own television line up.
Here are some statistics (provided by T.V.-Free America) that might make you want to go for that walk instead of watching that reality show marathon.

So in short, if you want to be a couch potato and sit in front of your flat screen for hours as your brains go on hiatus, feel free. But give your kids a chance to show you how damn awesome they are by taking them running, jumping, reading, playing baseball or basketball or talking your ear off as you take a stroll around the block. You just might be amazed at what phenomenal little people you have been given the honor to raise.
Also walking with your kids will give you a head start on getting rid of that third ass cheek that will miraculously appear during the winter season:)

I just love your views on what we call commercialism. It certainly is a disease (and you know as well as I which "whore" is spreading it!). Thank you so much for this Christine!
Oh, and congrats on your 500 fans!
Howdy Christine - I can agree with much, maybe most, of what you said. However there were some TV ads that I enjoyed immensely. All of those were full of humor, like the old Nichols and May Jax beer ads and the like. The crazy Jack in the Box ads are also often funny - not all the time - but often. Gus
As long as they don't put pop-up ads into books, I'll get by. You're spot on, though, Christine. Television has been ruined with ever more intrusive advertising. I can't stomach it for more than half an hour at a time now, and that's limited to news broadcasts. They're not turning my mind into mush. I'm not there.
I always found it amazing at how my children believed everything, about every product, advertised, when they watched their few little shows. The biggest concern which you covered was the violence etc., we allow into our homes. If not careful we will become emotionally immune to the real hurt and sadness which is in the real world. Absolutely vital hub.
great article and very true. TV during dinner time is not good. In my opinion, the worst is when you see TVs in the car for kids to watch on car rides, or hand held video games while dining out. These are times when families have meaningful and much needed conversations. TV is dangerously capable of warping our youth. Real life is nature, and human interaction.
Thanks guys for reading.
It wouldn't surprise me to see 45 minutes of commercials to 15 minutes of shows per hour in the not to near future. An hour long program from the 60s will have over 50 minutes of programming, one from the present, less than 40 minutes of actual programming. Good hub!
Great Hub. This reminds me of when my daughter was little and was more interested in the commercials than the programs. She told me if I would buy the Slimfast I would get thin with the one drink. If only it was that easy.
What I also hate about all those commercials is how the volume on your TV will be louder than your program.
i WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE STATISTIC ON CHILDREN WHO WERE AFRAID, OR UPSET BY THE VIOLENCE ON TV. I surely thought kids were de-sensitized by now.
I chose, 2 years ago, to stop watching television so I dont even know what the lineup is anymore.
Advertising whores? More like prostitutes. Cause honey they aint giving it away. And you dont have to guess who the pimps are.
godslittlechild-I've noticed that too. You get about three minutes of actual show compared to 5 minutes of commercials.
Sandyspider-The volume of the commercials does get louder, sometimes right in the middle of the ad. It's so annoying!
lisadpreston-I was shocked too. It's pretty "whoreable!"
HOORAY! More visibility for this "whoreable" problem! Go go girl!
I think so many of us tune it out but it still gets into our subconsciousness. Thanks Christine.
I like! l like! The thing is, advertising is very effective. Good advertising uses elements that is guaranteed to result in some type of mind control. Citizens outnumber corporations by the millions! What if we got together and started using these advertising techniques to spread messages of love, hope, and wisdom. Who says that brainwashing has to be evil!
Nice article...unfortunately these methods == more money for the big companies! That's why I'm in love with my DVR!

Right on, sister! I am sick of being advertised to. Now, while you are watching a show, you have to deal with those ridiculous pop-up ads. So, even if you have a DVR and fast forward through the commercials, you are advertised to, with pop-ups.
I also agree that children are being exposed to too much violence on TV. It's up to the parents to control it, but some parents are using the TV for a babysitter and don't realize what they are doing to their kids. I know there are some responsible parents that do control the situation.
