Five Keys to Home-Based Business Success
62Home-based businesses are not only a way to make extra money but a way to thrive financially long-term compared to only having a traditional job. If you've never started a home-based business before, there are a few key concepts that you need to keep in mind:
1) Business owners, regardless to whether they're home-based or traditional, tend to think differently than the average person in a good way.
Doing anything different in life takes some degree of personal risk, and not just financial risk. It doesn't happen overnight, but to be successful in a home-based business you have to be willing to educate yourself and stay focused on moving forward each day. Procrastination and distractions both have to be able to manage well to make progress.
Sometimes this requires extra effort, such as starting a business in your spare time while other people are watching TV. Other times it involves pressing forward even when obstacles come. It's also a very fun process however, especially if you're doing something that you love and that is worthwhile to you.
2) From a financial standpoint, going into debt to start a home-based business will likely cause it to fail before its time.
The advantage of a home-based business is you don't have the overhead and hassles that traditional businesses usually require. The biggest financial mistake I've seen people make is funding their home-based business on credit to the point it can't make a profit. I have cash flowed every successful business I have. Not only do you profit more easily, but you get to focus more on developing the actual business rather than how you're going to fix any financial issues.
3) Surround yourself with a supportive group of people.
My husband and I have great friends that always ask us how the businesses are going and are genuinely happy for us. I also have people in my life that take the 6:30 news at face value and would try to convince me that a business is not worth having, even though we're making more money than we've ever made right now. You can't change people, but you can personally choose who you let be an influence in your life. That's important to success in general, not just business success.
4) Realize that the whole process of creating and growing a business takes time, but it's worth the extra patience.
As an employee, you get the immediate result of a paycheck on a regular basis. The problem is your time is always tied to it. In the initial phases of a business, you have to pour extra income and often extra funds into it as an investment. The results of that may not show until months or years down the road, but the trade-off is that you can get your time and freedom back. That's something that even the best paying jobs can get you as long as you're actively working in them.
5) Find a bigger dream or purpose behind what you're doing.
Almost everyone starts a home-based business just for the extra money, but to "survive" all the dips and valleys you need to have a dream that will fuel you to keep going. My whole way of looking at things has continued to change ever since I started my first business at 19, and I couldn't go back to doing what most people do even if I wanted. If you see enough of what freedom can be like and what you can do to make an impact with that freedom, you'll have all the self-motivation you need to keep going.
Good luck and best wishes to you!
