Today I wish to "throw my hat into the ring" and talk about a subject that is dear to me. As I do so, I "take off my hat" to those who have come before me and tackled strange subjects or controversial issues. I do so with my "hat in hand" knowing that I am not exactly an expert and would never consider myself a "diva" of any sort, however, I must press forward so you won't get the impression I am "talking through my hat."

Whether you are sporting a Panama, Stetson, bonnet, bowler, chapeau, fedora, sombrero, stove pipe, straw, or ten- gallon, a hat is still a hat. It is an item of clothing worn on the head for as many reasons as there are people themselves. Hats are made in varying sizes depending on the size of the head, and in shapes also comforming to the head in question. There can be several parts that make up a hat, such as, the crown, the brim, the peak, the sweatband, and the hatband. Styles and colors of hats vary as much as the individual that wears them.

Hats are timeless they have been around as long as there have been heads to wear them. From it's origins in ancient Greece, Asia, and Egypt to the fashionable stores in Paris,France or Beverly HIlls, California, the hat has stood the test of time.

1) Visual Effect- The fashion of a hat can add a look of elegance and charm to almost any outfit. You might even call it the "icing on the cake", so to speak. It is an eye catcher and draws attention to the wearer in all cases. So if you want to make a statement or simply stand out in the crowd, you might consider adding a hat to your ensemble.

2) The Bad Hair Day- A hat is a perfect solution to a bad hair day. What better way to get rid of a problem than to cover it up? How else do you think we got the phrase "keep it under your hat"? It was used to cover up that nasty little secret.

3) To Prevent Hypothermia- One of the best ways to keep warm is to keep your head covered. You will be noticeably warmer if you do this simple thing.

4) To go incognito- Wearing a hat can add to a convincing disguise when you don't want to be recognized. An additional effect is the subtly of the common "sunglasses" (ahh... but that is for someone else to write about, possibly "Who is under those Foster Grants?")

5) Simply to have fun- So pick out a style of hat that fits your personality and enjoy the day under the shade!
