Mostly the advent of old age has been found to be associated with dementia. It is actually a set of symptoms that are caused by disorders associated with the brain. Memory loss is the common symptom but that alone cannot conclude that one has dementia. When one loses the basic ability of the brain like doing calculations, controlling the emotion, along with hallucinates and in the extreme cases, inability to dress and eat, we can conclude that dementia has set in. When you think of it carefully you will find that it is an alarming situation and anyone can be a victim including you.

Research has been going on to tackle this peculiar malady and it has revealed that there are many factors that can prevent dementia altogether or at least delay it. Let us take a look.

  • Lowering homocysteine can prevent or delay dementia. It has been found that folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 can significantly lower amino acid homocysteine and thereby reduce the chance of attack of dementia.
  • The people with high cholesterol level are more prone to dementia that those with low levels. So the people who maintain a low cholesterol level can easily counter the problem.
  • Lowering the blood pressure has also been found to control or fight dementia. The medicines that reduce the blood pressure are often used to control dementia in the older people who have high blood pressure. So if you can keep your blood pressure under control there is a chance that you will not suffer from dementia.
  • Controlling the inflammation of the brain can delay or prevent onset of the disease. Persons with inflammation of the brain have been found prone to the disease.
  • Finally, the natural remedy is to remain active. If you are in the habit of doing regular exercise then you are miles away from dementia. Also those people who do more work of the brain are likely to remain far off from the disease. Interestingly, those with higher range of academic degree are generally more immune to the disease. So it shows that studying helps. Is it not the easiest way to keep the problem at bay?
