Ah...yes...here I am, remembering that one year when I was a five year old girl:
No responsibilities, no rent to pay, spent all day playing.
Oh yeah, but I also got the chicken pox, started kindergarten (and got lost that one time after school), and was forced to dress as a bride for Halloween when I really wanted to be Barbie!

3. A Jewelry Box: I loved winding mine up, listening to the music, and storing my favorite jewels (generally plastic rings and necklaces that were most precious to me) in my special box.
4. A porcelain/ceramic tea set. These might be a bit more expensive than plastic, but also more fun! It adds a bit of realism to her tea parties, plus she can learn how to keep her fragile set safe. Who knows? She might pass the set on to her daughter someday, just as my mom passed hers on to me.

I have bookmarked it, neat ideas to give this gift to a child better than those electronic toys.
I've decided that my kids (my future kids) won't have toys that require batteries and make noise. My mom always "lost" the batteries for ours after the first day because she didn't want to go crazy listening to the artificial noises. We ended up using our imaginations to create our own sound effects.
A kitten is a very good idea! I am crazy about cats and have three of my own I saved from the street...

I liked your ideas. I had bought the jewelry box but it got broken, we already have a cat, dog and yorkshire and I have a victorian house that I bought for her last xmas that has yet to be put together by her "contractor dad" so I am selling it and buying a simpler one. I love the idea of getting her more fun dresses. I buy the little girls gowns for real parties and find they are more durable than the toy ones but I will be adding the hats and boas. Among her presents I wam getting her a gold locket with the picture of us in it. Thanks for your ideas.
if you are already mentioning a kitten, how about a puppy? Those are high maintenance gifts though and probably easier to go with one of your other suggestions.
