Anatomy of a Golf Swing

There is nothing like standing on the first tee box early in the morning knowing that you have the next four hours of peace and quiet to relax and enjoy the great game of golf. That thought stays with most people until they hit their first shot into the woods or make their first three putt from ten feet. Golf is a frustrating game, and an extremely challenging sport to get good at. That is exactly why people play the game. It is a sport that can last a lifetime, and in order to enjoy those wonderful days on the course, it is necessary to master the golf swing basics.

The golf swing starts with the set up. The first thing that needs to be learned is where the ball should be in relation to your feet when you stand over a shot. The general rule is that the longer the club is, the closer to the left foot the ball will be. The shorter the club is, the closer to the right foot the ball will be. This is a key component to the golf swing basics. An example would be hitting the driver. When you set up for a tee shot with the driver, you want the ball to be in a line with your left heel, or even just inside that. Your feet should be shoulder width apart, you knees slightly bent, and your back should be bent forward, but also nice and straight. If you were hitting a shot with your pitching wedge, the ball would be closer to your right heel and you would be standing closer to the ball since the club is shorter.

Once you have found a comfortable set up, the next part is the actual swing. Your hands should be gripping the club with your right pinky and left pointer finger interlocking. Your arms should form a V and they should be fairly straight. When you take the club back, you want to keep your left arm straight, and your right arm will bend slightly at the elbow. Your wrists should naturally cock at the top of the swing, and the club head should be over your head. One of the commonly missed golf swing basics is to pause at the top of the swing.

Once you have made that slight pause, it is time for the down swing. This should be led by the hands and left arm. On the down swing, it is extremely important to follow one of the golf swing basics and keep your head and eyes on the ball. As your arms come down and the club makes impact, you want to follow through with your hips, body and shoulders. The club should wrap up and around the body and you should hold the finish right at your target. Practicing all of these things will improve your swing and help you shoot lower scores.
