Install a Motherboard

A new computer has moved into the house and the old one is sitting around taking up space and collecting dust. Why not upgrade it?

Upgrading the computer can also be referred to as ‘refurbishing’ and is a term describing how computer hardware components have been either replaced with similar parts or updated with newer technology. Some people will snub their noses at the idea of a ‘refurbished’ computer but the costs that can be saved will change their minds quickly and if you have the skill, you’ll be their best friend and can even make extra money providing this as a service.

Purchasing a new or used motherboard may be necessary due to damage or for improved performance. Keeping the existing parts within your computer will require you to ensure that the motherboard and parts are compatible. To find out what parts your computer (Vista OS) is comprised of can easily be done, by navigating through your computer as follows ;

Click on Start
– Go to Control Panel
– Click on System
– Click Device Manager to view list

Now you should see a list of the parts that your computer contains. Write these down and save this information as you are now ready to do some shopping for a motherboard. It’s very important that all parts within a computer are compatible for proper operating functions.

The purpose of device drivers is to communicate between the various components, so that they all speak the same language. Most device drivers and parts are specific to the motherboard which means that they will only work on that particular operating system and again, is important to make note of this information.

Shopping for a motherboard should include or require specifications such as the following ;

Extra RAM slots
– A PCI slot, compatible for your graphics card
– A CPU Socket, compatible with your CPU
– Extra USB drives, for any extra plug ins

Upon purchasing your new motherboard, you must now check that all the parts will physically fit into their slots. Taking apart the computer will require that the power is off and disconnected. You must also ensure that you are properly grounded to prevent static electricity damaging any sensitive circuits in both acts of taking apart and during installation of parts.

I would also recommend that during this process that you write down each step you have taken. This will help during the installation of the new motherboard so that returning all the components will be easier. Keep your new motherboard manual nearby. Removing the old for the new motherboard will not be difficult but will require remembering the location for the other components.

Now that you have installed your new motherboard and reconnected all the wires you are ready to test. Turn on your computer and if you hear a beep that signals the motherboard detects the hard drive. Changing your motherboard will not result in any changes to your software. Open and explore various programs to ensure everything still runs smoothly. Congratulations on your new computer upgrade. Excellent hub Dame, I fear that I would mess it up though. I think the most I would actually do with a computer is update the RAM or maybe even as far as the hard drive.

Hi WC, it's not as difficult as it sounds once you know what parts to get but I agree, it does sound scary. Thank you for sharing your comments and visiting.

My wife built her own computer, and rebuilt it again later when she wanted an upgrade. That computer has been around for years, and only finally died on us because an insect got inside it and fried the motherboard. This was right after we built a computer for her parents, so when I suggested that we build our own again, her response was "NO! I'd rather buy one and rebuild it in a year if I need to."

More than likely we will, in fact, be rebuilding in a year or two. I have never had a store-bought computer that didn't start running into problems after that, but when she builds a computer, it can go for nearly forever before it needs much more than an OS upgrade.
