Flesh and Spirit

Introduction

In our walks with Christ we are constantly at war. The flesh is against the spirit and the spirit is against the flesh. We fluctuate from spirit to flesh and vice versa. In order to gain a spot in the Kingdom of God we must be holy and acceptable to the Lord. Sin cannot enter into God's kingdom. Blameless, spotless and perfect in every way is what is required of us. Until we get our flesh under subjection, we cannot be perfect in the Lord. To walk by faith and not by sight means to walk in the Spirit.

Jesus Freak

Adam

Adam was the first man created by the hand of God. Everything else, God spoke into existence, but Adam was formed by God's own hand. God molded and shaped him completely from head to toe. I can imagine God working like an artist sculpting out a statue. Massaging and rubbing getting everything perfect. His head and face created in the image of God. His body in the likeness of God. We must understand that God is spirit. He has no fleshly form as we do. Man likewise at the time had no fleshly form as we have.

Adam also warred against the flesh after he sinned in the sight of God. His sin caused flesh as we know it to come upon him and opened his eyes so that he no longer saw in the spiritual realm, but in the flesh. Knowledge of good and evil came upon him and cause him to be ashamed. He tried to hide from God because of his nakedness. This is the beginning of the war between flesh and spirit.

Cain

Cain murdered his own brother because of jealousy. His sacrifice was not acceptable to God. Some say it is because it was not a blood sacrifice. I can understand what they mean, but I am not sure that is the reason. The Bible states that without the shedding of blood there is no remission. God said to Cain, "Sin lies at the door." Sin was there and Cain had every opportunity to deal with his sin. He chose not to deal with it but to give in to it.

Samson

Samson was a strong man. The spirit of the Lord would come upon him and shake him causing him to have enormous strength like no other man ever had. He did many mighty works against the enemies of God. God had ordained him from birth to be a prophet. With the spirit of the Lord working so strongly in him, Samson still warred against the flesh. Many times the flesh won and eventually became his downfall.

King Saul

Samuel anointed Saul to be the first king over Israel. He followed God's instructions in doing so and Saul was a good king up to a point when he tried to do something that was not his calling to do. Saul failed in walking in the spirit at that time. The flesh has won again.

King David

David was a man after God's own heart. The Bible states that David was the apple in God's eyes. He was a mighty man of war against the enemies of God and worshipped God in spirit and in truth. Even with all that David did for the Lord, he still warred against the flesh and the flesh did win. he saw a married woman bathing from his rooftop one day and gave in to the desires of the flesh.

Simon Peter

Peter was a fisherman whom the Lord called to follow Him. There is no doubt that Peter loved Jesus but many time Peter failed to walk in the spirit. He walked on the water to meet Jesus but became afraid and when the flesh took over, he began to sink. When Jesus was arrested, Peter ran away but followed from a distance. He ended up denying knowing Jesus three times and each time the flesh was prevalent.

Indescribable

How Great is Our God

Grace of God

Even in our failures, God's grace is sufficient. His mercy endures forever and never ends. God claims in His Word that He will have mercy upon whom He will. In order to stop fulfilling the lusts of the flesh we must get closer to God. The only way to get close to someone is to get to know them personally. This is the essence of a relationship between two people. If there is no communication, there is no relationship. God always speaks in a still small voice and that voice is like a whisper. A whisper cannot be heard by a person who is distant from the whisperer. We must be close to God to hear His voice.

Once we get close enough to God to hear His voice, we must then be obedient to Him. (1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. .) Jesus said, "My sheep know my voice and a stranger they will not follow. " How many times have we followed the wrong voice? When Peter walked on the water then began to sink it was because he became fearful. He coubted that he was able to walk on water. This is what caused him to sink. His faith failed him and he started walking by sight. What he was was not pretty but scary indeed to the flesh.

Until we bring our flesh under subjection to the spirit, we will continue to fluctuate between spirit and flesh. it is like being double minded. The book of James states that a double minded man is unstable in all his ways. What it means is that a man can't make a decision. Why do you hesitate between two decisions?

Make a decision right now whom you will serve and serve him with all your heart, mind, body and soul. (Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what isthat good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. ) We must renew our way of thinking. We must be conformed to what God wants us to be. This is how we can put on holiness without which we cannot see God.

Good message, although I'm not sure where you got the notion that man had no fleshly form as we have when God created them? Eve was created out of a rib from Adam's side. The Bible states that God breathed into his nostrils. We have nostriles. I may have misunderstood what you intended.

Also, as long as we live in a body of sin, we will be sinners. We will not be able to live a perfect life in our bodies, even with the Holy Spirit. We are holy because He is holy. We will war with our flesh until the day we go to be with the Lord, but because of Jesus and His righteousness, we are not condemned, praise God!

To back up what I'm saying here:

Romans 7:22-25 "For I joyfully concur with the Law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wrteched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the Law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. Romans 8:1 is next: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and of death."

Hallelujiah! His Grace is greater than ALL our SIN, and every day I am thankful that His blood covers me, and His Spirit continues to use me, in spite of my downfalls. He gives me strength to keep yeilding my members as a vessel for Him.

I see what you are saying and forgive me for not being clear. When Adam was created he had a body. It was a different body than what we now have. It was a body like the one we will receive when we are called to heaven. I will edit it when I figure out exactly what to say.

God is good and His mercy endures forever. \o/

The flesh is a constant battle. I fall over and over, sometimes many times in a day. I always confess and keep my lists of sins short by immediately confessing to God. Satan wishes to dishonor, discredit, disillusion and just plain destroy us. But our forefathers of the faith faced this and became men of faith.

SirDent, because man was made from the earth, I honestly think he didn't have a spiritual body, but that's not critical to salvation, of course! I wonder if he couldn't be at any place on the earth in seconds, who knows? We only know for sure that he had a rib and a nose (lol).

no body, brother, you are so loving and I know it's because of God's great love for you that you feel. His grace is sufficient and He is with us as we accept ourselves and grieve over our fleshly struggles. Just don't let that hinder you from the beautiful ministry He is doing through you!

Love to all ~~

The body Adam had was not a resurrected glorified body, if this is what the two of you are after, It was just a pervectly made body without any blemishes nor weakness, This is why his descent could intermarry because they do not have the weakness, for a want of a better word, that our bodies have today. Also, it allowed him to live for over 1000 years because it did not have the inperfection we have.

This is a great hub. It would make a powerful Sunday School or midweek Bible lesson. Excellent message with powerful truths.

I love your chosen closing Scripture Rom 12:1-2The thing about living sacrifices is that they keep trying to craw off the altar.

Grace and peace.

"Many times the flesh won and eventually became his downfall".

"...one day and gave in to the desires of the flesh."

"...ran away but followed from a distance."

These are the sentences that struck me deeply...and I believe we learn from our mistakes and as long as we admit them and Learn and ask for Forgiveness and honestly try ...we will always improve and be in His Likeness...

Howzit SirDent

Nice hub this, yes Adam did have a body like us, before he sinned his body was filled with the Glory of God the Spirit of God .We will only be like Adam was , when the resurrection takes place and be like the second Adam Jesus. At the moment we are eternal and have put on immortality, when we were born again, new creatures. Remember man was created in the image and likeness of God. Adam was the first fleshly being to be in Gods likeness the rest were animals.

I have read some where in the past that Adam and Eve received skin after the sin, but that would contradict the other scriptures, I also heard that Light is PLASMA, which is true, and the light congealed and became blood, I wouldnt dig too deep into that though.

God Bless, keep it up

I see that I will have to write anothert hub on the flesh of Adam before and after the fall. Been trying to figure out how to get what I mean across, but it is hard in just a few words.

In the Garden of Eden there was a tree of life which wasn't mentioned specifically until after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. It stands to reason that they had eaten from that tree before the fall. God would not let them eat of it after the fall.

The body that Adam had was a body of flesh. When he ate the forbidden fruit, he changed not only inside, but otuside also. This is what I meant about a different body.

He actually went from having life, to having death upon him. Paul wrote, "Who shall deliver me from this old body of death." A body of life became a body of death.

I hope that clears it up. If not I will write a new hub about it.

Good hub. Im with Carrie though when it comes to Adam because he did have a body. As for Cain and why God didn't accept his sacrifice. It was 1, because it wasn't a real sacrifice; meaning it was not from the heart. Plus Cain tryed to give God something that was already cursed. For if you rember God cursed the ground when Adam and Eve messed up and gave into temptation. Good work though, keep it up! you have sum good hubs! God bless ya

SirDent,

This is wonderful! You have also given great biblical examples. That is a marvelous scripture in Romans. As you stated: "We must renew our way of thinking. We must be conformed to what God wants us to be. This is how we can put on holiness without which we cannot see God." God is worthy of our Praise! "The TRUE worshippers must "Worship God in SPIRIT and in TRUTH!"

Blessings
