Flight of the Conchords - Business Time
77
I'm going to introduce you to a cheeky duo from New Zealand. The Flight of the Conchords is a Grammy-Award winning band that has created some hilarious songs and movies. Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement sit together on stools with their acoustic guitars and wry humor, and create unique shows that are a combination of comedy and pop. Although they have been featured in BBC shows, and there is an HBO series entitled "Flight of the Conchords," loosely based on their own struggles as a band, their recognition is still probably highest in Australia and New Zealand.
Highlighted in this Hub is my favorite song: Business Time. I first heard this number on a Seattle radio station about 5 years ago during their 5:20 funny offering. It was so popular that the station continued to run it each and every Wednesday afternoon. Listen to the song, and you'll see why.... "business time is on Wednesday nights!" The track is found on the Flight of the Conchords album, shown to the right. If you love it, as I do, you may just have to add it to your collection!
Business Time
Lyrics to "Business Time"
Aww yeah
That's right baby.
Girl, tonight we're gonna make love. You know how I know, baby? 'Cause it's Wednesday. And Wednesday night is the night that we make love. Tuesday night's the night that we go and visit your mother, but Wednesday night is the night that we make love. 'Cause everything is just right conditions are perfect. There's nothing good on TV. Conditions are perfect. You lean in close and say something sexy like, I might go to bed I've got work in the morning. I know what you're trying to say baby. You're trying to say, 'Oh, yeah. It's business time. It's business time.
It's business.
It's business time.
That's what you're trying to say you're trying to say let's get down to business it's business time.
It's business.
It's business time.
Next thing you know we're in the bathroom brushing our teeth. That's all part of it, that's foreplay. Then you go sort out the recycling. That's not part of it but it's still very important. Then we're in the bedroom. You're wearing that ugly old baggy t-shirt from that team building exercise you did for your old work. And it's never looked better on you.
Oh, team building exercise '99.
Oh, you don't know what you're doing to me.
I remove my jeans but trip over them 'cause I still got my shoes on. But I turn it into a sexy dance.
Next thing you know I'm down to just my socks and you know when I'm down to just my socks what time it is, it's time for business. It's business time.
It's business.
It's business time.
You know when I'm down to just my socks it's time for business that's why they call it business socks.
It's business.
It's business time.
Oh.
Ooh, makin' love.
Makin' love for two.
Makin' love for two minutes.
When it's with me you only need two minutes, 'cause I'm so intense. Two minutes in heaven is better than one minute in heaven. You say something like, "Is that it?" I know what you're trying to say. You're trying to say, 'Aww yeah, that's it. Then you tell me you want some more. Well I'm not surprised. But I'm quite sleepy.
It's business.
It's business time.
Business hours are over. Right, right.
It's business.
It's business time.
No matter how many times you listen to this song, it will always make you laugh. The band has precise comedic timing, that does not come through just by reading the lyrics to the right.
In "Business Time," they take a mundane Wednesday evening, so boring in fact that there is nothing on TV and transform it into.... a 2 minute sexual encounter. The lead up to this brief little roll in the hay is from a classic male perspective. Anything is foreplay and everything is sexy. Yep - sorting recycling. His girlfriend saying that she's got to get some rest. And the ugly baggy T-shirt, specifically described from her last job.
What makes the scene even funnier is the over-excitement of the male. He can't even get his pants off quickly enough because he's still wearing his shoes! And then he's down to his "business socks." Oh yeah.... No wonder its all over in 2 minutes.
And then, classically, the poor woman is finally aroused, but her boyfriend is done. And he's tired. So she's out of luck. At least until next Wednesday. She might as well turn on the TV and see what is on.

The Flight of the Conchords are so funny, I just couldn't wrap this up without adding another videoclip. Though "Business Time," is my favorite song, this one is classic too. "Something for the Ladies." It comes in a close second to "Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring!" In fact, I'll add that one too. Enjoy. Oh, and turn down the volume so your boss doesn't hear what you're up to! After all, it is, in fact, business time.
