Flight Advice-Dealing with Hand Luggage

Most flights allow you to take one item as hand luggage on your flight, and you want to make this as light and manageable as possible. Even though it can be tempting to stock up on all your favorite books, snacks, music and other basics for your flight, packing smart does mean packing light and economically. With today's increasing security at the airport, you also don't want to get held up because of excessive carry-on. Some airlines now require a complete hand luggage search, and all your personal items might need to be zipped up in separate bags before they are allowed on board. Packing your basic necessities should be your plan of action! Here are some other simple tips for dealing with hand luggage:

  • Pick a small duffel bag or suitcase that you can carry in one hand. You'll need to fit this into your overhead compartment easily
  • Avoid overpacking. Remember that anything that doesn't fit in the overhead compartment will need to sit at your feet. If the bag is too bulky, you're asking for an uncomfortable flight
  • Pack your absolute necessities at the top. The last thing you want to be doing in your cramped space is rummaging through stacks of books, magazines, or electronic gear just to track down that comb or piece of gum
  • Don't pack anything breakable. These items should be wrapped tightly and securely, and left in your suitcase
  • Don't leave hand luggage anywhere out of your sight. You'll want to stay as close to your possessions no matter where you are
  • Make sure you have an identification tag attached in case someone mistakes it for their own
  • Pack a snack or two in case you find yourself without access to food for a period of time

You can enjoy your trip in comfort, style, and peace of mind. Just take some time to pack smart, and relax on that next flight!
