The Marlins have been a major league franchise since only 1993, but they have two world championships already—in 1997 and 2003. Unfortunately, this city has struggled with their baseball team with attendance, and the fact that after both titles they blew up the teams with fire sales to bring in young talent. Somehow though, it keeps working for them. The team has fielded some amazing players, pitchers included, and here is a list of the all-time Top 5 in strikeouts for Marlins’ pitchers to date:

Dontrelle Willis (757)—Dontrelle was a very promising young pitcher until a trade to Detroit and subsequent control issues have slightly derailed his career. Willis came up with the Marlins and pitched in Florida from 2003 to 2007, and he ranks first in team history with 757 strikeouts. Willis had his best season in 2005, when he came in second in NL Cy Young voting—going 22-10 with a career best 2.63 ERA and career high 170 strikeouts.

A.J. Burnett (753)—A.J. Burnett was drafted by the Mets but began his major league career with Florida after a trade that brought Al Leiter back to New York. He ranks second in Marlins’ history with 753 strikeouts, and Burnett had his best season in Miami in 2002, when he went 12-9 with a 3.30 earned run average and 203 K’s.

Ryan Dempster (628)—Ryan Dempster began his major league career with Florida, pitching for the Marlins from 1998 to 2002 before moving on to Cincinnati and then the Cubs. Dempster struck out 628 batters in Florida, ranking him third all-time for the franchise. He had one of his best seasons with the Marlins in 2000, when he went 14-10 with a 3.66 ERA and a career high 209 strikeouts.

Josh Beckett (607)—Josh Beckett was a Marlins’ draft pick and helped them win a World Series in 2003. He pitched for them from 2001 to 2005 before signing with Boston, and Beckett ranks fourth in Florida history with 607 strikeouts. His best season in Florida was 2005, when Beckett went 15-8 with a 3.38 earned run average and 166 K’s.

Brad Penny (570)—While Brad Penny more or less blossomed with the Dodgers, he began his major league journey with the Marlins and pitched in Florida from 2000 to 2004. Penny ranks fifth in the team’s history with 570 strikeouts, and his best season there was 2001. That year, despite a mediocre 10-10 record, Penny had a 3.69 ERA and career high 154 strikeouts.
