Fly Fishing Casting

It will be difficult to fly fish if you do not have sufficient skills in fly fishing casting.

Casting is all about how the fly enters, or lands, in the water so that it appears to be a real insect. Or being able to cast in front of the rising fish quickly and accurately. Sometimes you have to overcome wind conditions, or cast from a small boat that is unsteady in the water. Or cast under a tree branch or make a long distance cast. Whatever the case may be there are common basics to all fly fishing casting which are listed below.

1. If you remove the slack from your line prior to starting the fly fishing cast your line will move more efficiently in the air on both forward and back casts. This includes how you pick up your line for the rear cast as well as to what extent you eliminate slack in the back cast. You will waste some of your cast stroke if there is slack in the line prior to starting the cast, you will not move the line or load the rod until the slack is removed.

2. On both back and forward casts increase the speed until you halt the rod in the correct position. Constantly increasing your speed throughout the casting stroke loads the rod (preferable), but if you cast back and forward at the same speed you don't load the rod or it allows the rod tip to unload prior to the end of the stroke, which causes the fly fishing caster to lose power and causes a curve in rod tip travel.

3. ) The size of the casting stroke must vary with the length of line past the rod tip.
In better terms, short line short stroke, long line long stroke.
This is one of the major causes of a tailing loop. If you find that your loop is tailing and you think your stroke is allright, try increasing the length of the stroke, this should stop the tail.

4. How your rod tip travels during the casting stroke determines how your line will travel through the air. If the rod tip travels straight, then your line will be straight; if curved, then a curved or wavy line. The direction of your cast is determined by the direction of your rod tip at the end of the casting stroke. If your rod tip is curved by the way you stop your rod or hold your rod, then your line will curve on the cast as well.
