Fishing Waders
74When thinking about fishing in river and streams the fishing waders are probably the most important piece of fishing equipment you can buy. Don't think about skimping and buying a low quality pair of waders if you want to have a successful and enjoyable day of fishing in a stream. Waders offer protection from the cold water, keep you dry to prevent problems with your feet and allow you to navigate to the best spots possible for catching fish on a small stream or river. There are several things you will need to consider before buying your first set of waders including choosing the type of material, size, weight and style that is right for where you will be doing most of your fishing.
Types Of Fishing Waders
Fishing waders come in several different types. The most common types of waders you will come across in most tackle shops and retail stores are going to be either hip waders or chest waders.
Hip Waders as the name explains only come up to about your hips. Actually they cover up to the top of your thigh and attach at the hip via a strap of heavy material that is ment to connect to your belt at the waist. These types of waders are good if you are only planning on fishing in shallow streams or from just off the banks of most rivers. You wouldn't want to use these if you plan on crossing deeper sections of the river or navigate extensively through deeper waters. Hip waders tend to usually be made of a heavy rubber or nylon and will most commonly be found with a boot already attached. You can get some good deals on hip waders for fishing when they go on clearance at local tractor supply or rural farm stores instead of paying top dollar for them at bait shops or sporting goods stores.
Chest Waders- Just like you might imagine they come up to mid to upper chest on the fisherman. Chest waders allow you much more versatility when it comes to navigating through deep waters or pockets in rivers and streams. Caution should always be used to keep from allowing water over the top of them as they can easily pull you under if filled with water. Depending on the temperature of water, the bottom structure of the stream and environment around your fishing area will determine the type of chest waders you choose for fishing. I myself prefer a neoprene chest wader with stocking foot. Stocking foot chest waders allow you to wear a separate wading shoe or boot instead of having one attached to the fishing waders themselves. This type of wader tends to be lighter and easier to get in and out of the water in my opinion. If you choose a chest wader with attached boot you will most likely find a quality pair of simms, red ball or other brand name wader in either neoprene, heavy nylon or rubber. Choose the type that is both going to keep you warm, allow you the best range of motion and provide you the best comfort for a long days fishing.
