Fogscreen Projector

Even though modern technology has invested millions, even billions, into projection screen technology, high definition projectors, and even projectors for our cell phones, we have forgotten that we will always need something to project on.

Unfortunately, with the tragic proliferation of advertising these days, we are probably looking at a future world where all the space on the buildings is taken for billboards and other various projected ads. The only place that would not be taken is the spaces that people walk through.

However, that is an option that we can use, even now with the Fogscreen projector. Fogscreen uses an ultrasound projector to blast water into droplets, and they travel with the air to create a curtain of screen to project an image on. Believe it or not, this Fogscreen projector will eat through 1 to 2.5 gallons per hour, so you might want to connect some plumbing to it as well as an extension cord.

Best of all, this is one environmentally sound machine. The wall of fog can be walked through without leaving a residue or any harmful effects at all. I’m wondering if you will feel that wet feeling you get when you stand too close to your sprinkler. You know, when little water droplets you can’t see hit you. Something tells me the effect will be something like that.

As you can see with the video below, it is possible to interact with the Fogscreen Projector in real-time. I mean, the guy is drawing on it and making fireworks designs there from both sides of the fogscreen. You have to admit that it’s pretty darn impressive. However, I would be more interested in seeing if you could do some Windows or other less crude operations. I suppose we’ll have to wait until the next generation of Fogscreen Projection.

In the meantime, the visual factor will really work when someone really gets an ad across. Sure, I can avoid looking at the many thousands of billboards that I see every day, but if I have to walk through in order to get in someplace where I want to be, that is difficult to ignore. There is talk about placing these in the subways, since it would be easy to install in underground tunnels. That way a consumer would have to pass through them. That would definitely get a message across.

This is actually available now for about $40,000 USD. I wouldn’t be surprised if you see this at Times Square. That sounds like a smart advertising move.

I like this concept of a fog projector billboard. I bet someone who owned a fog projector could put the projector run time up for auction and get paid as much to leave it turned off as to play ads. Where I grew up in Alaska, billboards are banned as a public nuissance. This projector situation might work better and be easier to control in communities like that.

Ok, this is an AWESOME product. But couldn't they have made it less expensive??? It would be fun to have one in your house to play around with, but who wants to invest $40,000 USD into a fog projector?!? Seriously, I would buy one if it were less. The interaction is an awesome idea though. Draw your own fireworks, do all kinds of fun crap like that.

Thumbs up for the idea, down for the price!

Actually, the price is lower now - though everyone can easily understand it can´t drop to thousands dollars in a night. :)
