The need for a tummy tuck or adominoplasty following extreme weight loss often comes as an unexpected surprise to many who have worked to go from a few hundred pounds to a fit and healthy size and weight.

Most insurance companies do not cover this surgery, labeling it as cosmetic.  While it is, indeed, cosmetic, it is often necessary for good mental health following weight reduction.

The surgeon's fee is the wild card.  A surgeon generally charges between $3,000 and $8,000 for the procedure.  While the price varies by area, it is also dependent on how much work the surgeon has to do.

As mentioned previously, many insurance companies do not cover this expense, claiming the procedure to be cosmetic and not necessary.  In some cases, doctors have been able to prove the necessity of such a surgery.  But, to be on the safe side, before considering the tummy tuck, it would be best to have approximately $10,000 set aside to cover the costs.

If you are overweight and anticipate needing or wanting a tummy tuck, start saving for the procedure the same day you start the weight loss program.  Check with your insurance company to see if the procedure is covered in full or partially.

Begin a surgery savings account.  It will be worth it.  When you have reached your desired weight, you will probably be ready for the procedure.
