Tummy Tucks are Often Necessary Following Extreme Weight Loss

The need for a tummy tuck or adominoplasty following extreme weight loss often comes as an unexpected surprise to many who have worked to go from a few hundred pounds to a fit and healthy size and weight.

Most insurance companies do not cover this surgery, labeling it as cosmetic.  While it is, indeed, cosmetic, it is often necessary for good mental health following weight reduction.

Before and After

Before and After the Tummy Tuck

Following extreme weight loss often leaves the body out of shape and loose skin that has lost its elasticity.  This most often occurs when the person who lost the weight was obese and had been extremely overweight for a period of time.

The Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

The adominoplasty procedure should only be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon in a facility that is accreditied.  While the term "tummy tuck" often makes us think of a minor procedure, it is a very serious operation that should only be performed by a surgeon with experience and full certification.

  • Check your doctor's credentials.
  • Ask questions.
  • Ask for references
  • Talk to other patients who have undergone the surgery.

Remember, the body you have worked for is yours.  Take your time when looking for a surgeon.  Feel comfortable with him or her.  Do not schedule the surgery until you are ready.  Know the benefits and the pitfalls.  Know your surgeon.

Abdominoplasty Tightens Muscles

One of the benefits of the abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) as compared to other procedures is that the muscles are tightened in addition to the skin removal

This is particularly beneficial to those who have experienced extreme weight loss.  All the exercise in the world cannot repair torn muscles or split muscles.  Exercise works on muscles that are in tact.  The tummy tuck can and will give the person who has lost weight a second opportunity to get in shape.

Following the tummy tuck surgery and recovery, the person will be able to work out and enjoy the benefits of weight loss and a healthy fit body.

Cost of Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Like most surgeries, the cost of the tummy tuck procedure varies from place to place across the country.

In general, the cost of the anesthesia is close to but usually under $1,000.  There is also the hosptial facility fee that can run between $1,000 and $1,500 in most areas.

The surgeon's fee is the wild card.  A surgeon generally charges between $3,000 and $8,000 for the procedure.  While the price varies by area, it is also dependent on how much work the surgeon has to do.

As mentioned previously, many insurance companies do not cover this expense, claiming the procedure to be cosmetic and not necessary.  In some cases, doctors have been able to prove the necessity of such a surgery.  But, to be on the safe side, before considering the tummy tuck, it would be best to have approximately $10,000 set aside to cover the costs.

Plan Ahead for the Tummy Tuck

If you are overweight and anticipate needing or wanting a tummy tuck, start saving for the procedure the same day you start the weight loss program.  Check with your insurance company to see if the procedure is covered in full or partially.

Begin a surgery savings account.  It will be worth it.  When you have reached your desired weight, you will probably be ready for the procedure.
