Are There Really Foods That Can Help You Lose Weight?

There are few foods that actually make you lose weight when you eat them, but there are many foods that can help you lose weight. The difference is that these work by indirect means, rather than some seemingly-magical means of burning fat.

For example, people think that taking meat and eggs out of their diet can help them slim down and lose pounds. While it is true that they contain a larger proportion of fat and calories, they are essential to keeping your muscular system healthy. Without these proteins, your muscles will degrade as you diet. Protein also takes longer to digest than other food groups, so those who have an egg in the morning or a little meat during meals stay full longer and thus eat less. They also contribute to satiety, meaning that you will be more satisfied and feel full sooner.

High Fiber Foods Can Help You Lose Weight

High fiber foods, like oats, lentils, and buckwheat products also help keep you full longer. Fiber is not easily digestible, so instead it stays whole in your digestive system. Their mass will tell your brain into thinking that you still have food inside you, albeit you cannot absorb the food. Fiber scrubs the insides of the gastrointestinal tract, and also makes moving your bowels easier. Plus, fiber is said to control blood glucose levels.

If you think that skipping meals can help you lose weight, better think twice. Though you do indeed skip the calories for that meal, you might unconsciously compensate in the succeeding meals. Plus, not eating anything lowers your energy levels and can cause problems like ulcers and the like. Eat regularly, and don’t skip meals, especially breakfast. Breakfast is the first chance to get some food into your system after a long period of time, and it will provide you with energy to start the day.

Some Other Foods That Can Help You Lose Weight

Foods that contain a lot of water, like fruits, can also help you lose weight. The water content contains no calories, and these foods contain lots of vitamins. Remember that they do not keep you full for long, so they’re better as snacks than bases for meals.

Drinking water is also important. Sometimes you feel “hungry” when what you actually feel is thirsty. Keeping yourself hydrated will keep you alert, so distribute your liquids intake throughout the day instead of gulping down glassfuls at mealtimes.

Eating more unprocessed foods and less of processed products is another thing that can help you lose weight. Packaged, processed foods often contain more sugar, sodium, and fat than if they were prepared at home. The less processed a food is, the more nutrients it retains, and therefore the more healthful they are. For example, try replacing white bread with wheat bread, pasta and polished rice with brown rice or millet. Also, avoid junk food and sweets, or limit them to being rare treats.

One food that does seem to burn fat away is chili peppers. They can create thermogenic effects for short periods in the body. Plus spicy foods are often eaten more slowly, and this gives the brain more time to sense that you are full.

The key is to manage your portions. Eating the right amount is just as important as achieving balance in your diet.
