Since you've come to this page, I assume that you are interested in Foot tattoo designs because you want to get a foot tattoo for yourself. Maybe you are just looking at the designs because you think they look cool. That's ok too, I'm going to add some really cool looking pictures to this site so you can see lots of examples. I'm also going to give you some practical advice for if you are looking to get these tattoos done for real.

Foot tattoos are definitely eye catching. The foot offers a nice flat canvas for the tattoo artist to work with, and even though they are becoming quite popular, they are still unique enough to look very individual. They are a great way of making your feet more eye catching and appealing.

So, what designs look good on feet? There are lots of different designs that look really good on feet, and they tend to be small and simple. For some reasons that will become clear later on in this article, it's not a good idea to get very complex designs done on the feet - they will spoil over time.

The most popular ones are flower tattoos and stars.

Other designs that look good on feet include Rosary tattoos, shooting stars, butterflies and tribal tattoos. Celtic Knotwork can look nice, but avoid overly complex patterns. Also, fairy tattoos have proven to be quite popular.

One of the main reasons why foot tattoo designs are rarer than other ones is that they are more painful than other areas. When getting tattoos, the general rule is that the closer to the bone the tattoo is, the more it's going to hurt. The skin on your feet is very close to the bones, so these tattoos can be a lot more painful than others. This is why some tattoo artists will not do them.

Another potential problem to watch out for with foot tattoo designs is ink migration. This is where the ink tends to spread out over time, so the design slowly begins to look blurry. Although this can happen to any tattoo done anywhere on your body, it is more common with the feet than elsewhere.

This means that you may find yourself having to return to the artist some time later to get the tattoo reinked. To reduce the problem, the best place to get the tattoo done is on the top of the feet - the worst place is on the sides of the feet and toes.

You should make sure you go to a tattoo artist who is experienced with foot tattoos for these reasons.

Another problem that you will face is the issue of healing. Foot tattoos are in an area where there will be a lot of rubbing due to the motion of the shoe against your foot when you walk. If you've ever had a tattoo done before, you will know that rubbing is a BAD thing, so you will probably need to go without shoes or socks while the tattoo is healing - this can be very inconvenient.

There are some foot care guidelines that will help you to speed up the healing:

Firstly, try to wear open shoes like flip flops while the tattoo is healing. There are even topless flip flops, called down unders, which can prevent all rubbing. If you do find yourself having to wear shoes, it's advisable to wear two pairs of light socks to reduce the friction. However, it's best to avoid shoes entirely.

The summer is the best time of year to get a foot tattoo done, because winter can be too cold for you to go without shoes for a long period of time.

Avoid direct sunlight on the tattoo. Sunlight can be harsh on skin, especially when it is damaged or healing.

Use a foot bath to keep the skin clean and to prevent infection of the foot tattoos. When you dry your feet, just dab at them with the towel, don't rub them.

Avoid swimming while your foot is still healing.

While you are going around barefoot, it can increase the chances of infection. For this reason, you should take more care to keep your feet clean. Getting a professional foot tattoo from an expert reduces the likelihood of developing an infection, but it does not prevent it entirely.

To summarize, here are the benefits and the drawbacks of foot tattoo designs:

Benefits:

They are easy to hide, which can be a big benefit if you work in a conservative environment.

It is a very striking and exotic look.

Drawbacks:

The tattoos can be a lot more painful that other areas.

They tend to blur over time and can need to be reinked.

The healing process is slower than elsewhere.

They carry a higher risk of infection.

It's a very bad idea for diabetes patient to get foot tattoo designs, or tattoos applied anywhere below the waist, as it can affect their blood circulation.

With all of these drawbacks, you may think there's no point getting a foot tattoo, and I'll be the first to admit that they are not for everyone. However, given the fact that many people will want to avoid them for these very reasons, they remain very exotic and fairly rare - which is good news for those brave souls with enough courage to go for it!
