Football: How to Play Linebacker, Part I-Stance and Start
64Only The Tough Guys Need To Apply
In the linebacker position, there are players that play inside and there are players that play outside. The position requirements are very different for each. Generally speaking, the outside linebackers require more speed than do the inside backers. On the other hand the inside backers usually have more size than the outside backers. Naturally we would like for all of them to be 6'4 and run a 4.5 forty. But that's not happening.
As one might guess, the position of linebacker is one of the toughest to play. (as are all positions) One of the reasons it is so difficult to play is because against a pass, they are defensive backs and against a run, they're defensive linemen. Plus, they must decide which one they're supposed to be in a very short "read step" without taking false steps. This has to be a reaction because there is no time to think about it. And the only way it can become a reaction is through hours of repitition in practice.
The following drills will teach you stance and how to read. I hope they're helpful. Thanks for your interest..........
