Football: The 4-2-5 Defense - Nose Tackle Play

The Nose Tackle is the most difficult to play of the two inside positions. I know I will get a lot of argument on that point. However, in my humble opinion, he is the one that almost always is double teamed. As a coach, I want a player in that position who is so good, the opposing team has to double team him. If that happens, someone else will be free.

In my earlier article on the 4-2-5, I indicated the qualities we look for in a nose tackle. Aside from the normal attributes, he must have quickness. This quality puts extreme pressure on the blocking schemes of offenses. A great nose tackle can absolutely change the dynamics of a game.

In the 4-2-5 defense, there are two basic alignments that we use. When we align him on the center, we call this "0 Shade" and he is responsible for the weakside 'A' gap. When he is aligned on the offensive guard, he is shaded inside and is still responsible for the same gap. There are good arguments for both alignments and techniques. One of the reasons I prefer the '0' Shade alignment is that it keeps the center off our middle backer.

Below you will find diagrams and coaching points for both alignments. Please feel free to leave comments and any questions you might have. If you have a second, hit one of the ads if you get a chance. Thanks for reading...........
