What will be my role?

When do I have to stop playing?
When do I have to stop playing?

Girls Can't Play

How many more years do you think it will be before women get the money the men get for playing? I remember playing tackle football with the boys at Holy Family Institute, and causing them to get so angry that they couldn't catch me. One boy actually threw himself into the mud after another touch down ran by me. I could throw a spiral better than most boys my age back then too. Lets just say that I wasn't the last picked for any team.

When I was growing up in the 60's, women's professional football wasn't even a thought. Neither was basketball. The times they are a changing. I worked with a woman who belonged to a team called the Pittsburgh Passions. They run, pass, tackle, practice and ride buses to a lot of their games. There is still one huge difference. they don't get paid to play and they have to raise their own money for the privilege to take the field. The field isn't an expensive stadium with tons of fans either. So why do they do it?

My co-worker told me that some day things will change. She said the men's teams started out the same way. But that doesn't explain why she dons the pads and gets knocked to the ground for nothing. The only explanation I can come up with is that the love of the game overpowers these women's sense of fairness. Is there really this lack of interest in women's sports, holding them back from profiting like the men? Or is it more to the truth that men don't want the playing field even, and why not?

What are your thoughts on this subject? If you were ever a girl who enjoyed playing football, and realized that there wouldn't be a future in it for you, do you remain bitter about it?
