College Football forms a major part of the football community. Youngsters and students start playing the games as early as high school and in college. There are slight differences in the rules of football that are played in high school, in different colleges as well as in NFL Games. It is important to know about the differences to understand football better.

Here are some glimpses of the rules which are slightly different which might be of interest to you.

  • Any player is considered to be down in case in the match or the game the player’s body except the feet or even the hands touches the ground. There is a small exception with the holder for field goal and extra point attempts. In case of NFL any player is said to be actively playing until the person is actually forced down by the opposing team member.
  • There is no two minute warning in case of college football. This can happen only under rare cases when the scoreboard clock malfunctions or is not actually used to monitor the time.
  • The clock usually stops just after the offence completes a first down and starts once again. It is assumed that the clock would not normally stop after the referee declares the start of the game being the ball ready. In case of NFL, the clock will not stop under any condition even after a first down.
  • There was an introduction of overtime rules in college football in the year 1996. There are separate rules of overtime if the game goes to overtime. In case of NFL the overtime decision takes place after a fifteen minutes sudden death quarter.
  • In case of college football the extra point ties are usually attempted from a three yard line. In case of NFL there is a two yard line used in the game.
  • In case of a college football a pass is said to be complete if the feet of the receiver is inbounds when the catch takes place. In case of NFL, both feet have to be inbounds.
