Ford F-150 Consumer Complaints Broken Power Window Regulators

The Power Windows Keep Breaking.

I have a 2004 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4 Triton.  Four weeks ago I went to put the window up and I heard a noise.  The radio was up so I didn't think about it until I came back out and wondered where my window went.  This was just the first time in four weeks.

I took the door panel off because I could hear the motor was still working so I figured it came off the track.  When I looked I was baffled because there was this strange plastic piece in an odd spot with a bunch of steel wire tangled up in it.  So I put the door panel back on and called Ford.  Luckily it was still under warranty.

Ford said that the part was $500.00 but that I only needed to pay $100.00.  Three hours later, I get in my car and figure it is all good.  What is the possibility that it would happen again?  No harm really, just a one broken regulator.  So I thought!

Two weeks later...

Two weeks to the day, I hear the same noise and another window regulator broke. Two weeks later mind you. The first one was on the drivers side rear window, which is a window we rarely use. This time it was the passenger side rear window.

So as frustrated as I was, we made another appointment and took it in. Yet $100.00 more down the toilet. I said, "Look, is there a recall on this problem or not because it is a bit ridiculous for this to be happening especially when we were just here two weeks ago with the same problem."

The mechanic says, "Well, you really can't tell with these things...and...I have seen it happen were all four windows would go out." Hold the heck up! Did I just hear him correctly? Anyways, today is what August 12th, two weeks after the last time I was there for the same friggin' thing.

This time it is the passenger side window. Now I am friggin' angry beyond belief because we have to shell out another $100.00 on a fully warrantied vehicle that we paid an extra $1500.00 for extended coverage. I told Jeff that when he makes the appointment this time, he better put his foot down because this is practically criminal.

So while he was making an appointment and giving them that WTF! I got on the internet almost certain that I am not the only one experiencing a domino of broken power window regulators. And it did not surprise me to find over 1000 consumer complaints on the 2004 Ford F-150 all with the same exact complaint.

"I was driving in my car and I heard a noise and my window came crashing down". Now one of the complaints I read was a woman who was on the freeway when it happened and her window actually shattered and nearly caused an accident on the freeway.

So I kept looking. Turns out the Department of Motor Safety had issued a request to Ford to recall these cheap plastic regulators because they are a safety issue and Ford has done nothing about it. While the complaints continue to filter in, one thing is certain this is dangerous, it's inconvenient and it's costing the consumers big money whose warranties have expired.

One report reads he had to shell out $1,500.00 and he hadn't that much money and as soon as he got the 3 windows fixed, yes that is right... Thumbing through the thousands of complaints on the same damn thing, many of them had 3 or more of their windows go out at the same time.

Some took issue with having children in the backs of their trucks in cold weather, in the rain, on long road trips etc...So tomorrow when I go back to Ford for the 3rd friggin time, I am taking all the 1000 complaints with me because I refuse to pay for something that they knowingly know is defective and dangerous and wont do anything about it.

And if I shall fail then I need more people to complain because apparently even with 1000 that I have found + who knows how many others that did not complain via the internet, it is not enough. Heaven forbid it wont take a fatal accident to get them to just recall the friggin' cheap pieces of plastic crap and then burden a family with the medical bills for one stupid piece of plastic.

Look it up yourself.

I am just one of the many consumers who were not told about the annoying and dangerous little defect.  Who looks up a vehicle report for power window regulator?  I know I didn't but now I wish we would have.

Ford is not the only offender with shoddy components, but the response from Ford was pathetic! Renault also have window problems, but the biggest con on the Renault is the timing belt. It is buried under two housings, costs a fortune to replace, and I have seen them in need of replacement at 60,000 klms! Design faults like this should be a thing of the past with CAD.

I know it just makes me angry that they wont do anything. I am really going to throw a fit tomorrow...in a nice way.

I have never driven a Renault but sure as many vehicles have defects, I believe you. I had a Toyota Pickup a while back that I loved and it had timing 'chain" trouble and that was really bad.

They should be a thing of the past but I don't know what CAD is.

My sister had her drivers window of her Ford pickup go out, when she was just getting off work a few weeks back. Lucky for her, she has a friend who is a good mechanic and fixed it by just replacing the part. No labor cost included. I don't know for sure what it cost her for the part, but it was not $100. It is a real pain and a worry with the way things are today. I know she's worried the other window may go out too. Maybe its a good thing I have always had windows that you roll up on your own? Just a thought.

I used to rent cars for a living Sandy, out of college. On two occasions, I worked at an auto mall that housed Ford, Nissan, and Hyundai...Guess who's customers I got the most of? I mean, we had so much business from them--about 25 to 35 customers a day from just Ford alone! In our fleet of cars, we only had 50 cars! I'm a huge fan of Honda myself. Love them to death, especially when their made in Japan (top notch).

Add another one to your list of windows just falling down. It's like WTF I wasn't even in the damn thing.

sandra rinck profile image

sandra rinck  says:

I know Gary it is like WTF!

I just got back from Ford. I asked them to replace the last window because it is obviously going break too because all of the other ones had failed.

They said that they couldn't replace it unless it's broken. I said, WTF. You know it's going to break and you want me to come back when it happens so I can spend another three hours of my life in there and another 100.00 out of my pocket knowing it is a problem that can be fixed before it is a "real" accident.

They said, yes. So I called the Ford Consumer "hotline". The woman I talked to there made a file for us, told me the same friggin' thing, said unless the department of traffic and motor safety issues a recall, they wont do anything about it.

I said " THEY ALREADY DID THAT AND YOU AREN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT, DO YOU NEED PEOPLE TO WAIT UNTIL SOMEONE DIES BEFORE YOU FIX THE F**KING PROBLEM."

Yes, at this point I was yelling because the lady already knew of the problem but still kept saying, "well unfortunately, unfortunately, ..."

Finally I just hung up because I wasn't going to get anywhere with that.

So when they finally brought my truck back out, guess what. There was a huge scratch down the side of it. Of course I noticed it right away. It was on the door that they were replacing the regulator on.

When I went back it and was like, oh holy crap, WTF. The service manager (nice enough guy though) was like, oh it looks like a scratch from a bush or something..see all these other (faint) little scratches... must be from the same thing.

1. I was like, these scratched aren't even going in the same friggin direction and 2. It was not there when I brought my truck in.

So, they did take it back in to buff it out all to leave but still a faint scratch on my truck. You would think I am making this stuff up, but OMFG!

very good hub. I had a BA FALCON that used to stop at around 10000 klms as I turned right. After many complaints to Ford I lost my cool and went to see the general manager and at last they found out water was dropping into a solinoid or something and fixed it after eight times being left on the side of the road regards brownlickie

Did they reimburse you for the money you spent having it fixed? I hope so. You have a lot of patients, I would have lost my cool after the third time.

i just replaced the window motors in my dad's 1991 ford f-150. both of them went out within a week or so of each other. i found the "new" motors on ebay for 76.00 dollars and the labor was a few cuts and a lot of fussing cause ford didn't even have holes drilled in the metal panel to remove the screws to get them out. bad design i'd say. I hate to say it is just the Ford. I have had lots of problem with Dodge power windows as well.

Hello y'all

Guess, I am not the only one then, interesting...my 2004 F-150's rear passenger window just went out, I just bought this truck two months ago from Carmax, warranty expires 30 days, so oddly, the window regulator broke on exactly the 60th day after purchase! 09-11-09! ain't that interesting??

Now I cannot find a window regulator for rear in Autozone and Napa etc...they just have the front, the Ford dealership (I hate car dealerships) wants to sell me the whole part (it comes with the motor) for $180! They claimed not having the regulator by itself which is all I need... Is there a way to get Ford to recall this $HITY part??

Hey Adam that really sucks! Errr friggin' rip off. At the top of the page is a link to the site to get it recalled. Good luck finding parts at a reasonable price. I had a warranty and they tried to tell me the part was $500.00.

We have a top of the line Ford 1995 model too and the driver's window is also out. We got it fixed once and it fell back down. It is up but we don't open and close the window and it remains up, but it is awkward at a fast food window.

It sounds like the same problem.

Now, I understand your anger, however we have to think about it from the Ford perspective as well. As we know, Ford has been losing a lot of money this past year, and they're barely screeching by. If they were to make a recall on these cheap windows (that cost $500.00 each to replace), they would have to provide the new, better windows (which would at least cost $700 each), to you for free. That adds up to around $3000 per person who's bought this truck. And when you multiply that by the number of people who bought this truck, you can see why they didn't make the recall.

Now, I'm not saying that what they are doing is right, however, in this economic situation, Ford doesn't have the money to do any recalls, without going bankrupt.

I don't believe Ford expected this problem to begin with, this is the first time I'm hearing about windows breaking, it's ridiculous really, but I believe that they will fix the problem in their upcoming truck series.

Ford is one of the only car manufacturers in America, and it gives jobs to many Americans, I would really hate to see them go bankrupt.

However, Ford does have alot of issues with customer satisfaction ...

I went to FORD because my 2004 GMC was notthing but junk. Everything fell apart on that crap. I have a FORD F150 and the passanger side window suddenly went down on it own while I was driving. I thought my arm had hit the button but NOT. I could hear the grinding of the cable inside the panel and I new it was the plastic roller that the cable winds up on. I called the dealership and they gave me a price of 160.00 but I would like to find the part at a cheaper price. Any help would be appreaciated.

Good luck Brett with find a cheaper part. I think the cheapest I heard so far was 150.00 so...

just had the 4th one go - it's a clean sweep now - we've had to replace all 4 - it's 2004 F150 Super Crew. Ford needs to get their head out of you-know-where - at $500 each, this is getting real old - i just hope the replacement parts hold up better than the original ones

One of the reasons American car manufacturers have lost market share, is because they don't stand behind their product all the way.

Mmmm, a girl who tries to fix her own truck by removing door panels..... I thought they didn't make them that way any longer. :-)

I thought I was the only one with this problem with the F-150 drivers side window regulator and motor. I was driving on the hiway when all of a sudden I heard a loud noise I thought someone shot my driver side or I ran over someone or something that would make such a loud noise. Thank God there was no one next to me cause I could have caused an accident trying to see if I had been hit or hit someone. I got home checked the truck for any damage and didnt find any. Then I heard a loud noise again and noticed that my window was down and didnt go back up. I took my truck to a body shop and told me what happened. I pray that it doesnt happen again because it is going to be very expensive to keep my truck.

Ford F-150 Power Window Regulators - 5 out of 6 windows have failed within 5 months, first the rear slider, then sunroof and now three cab windows within the last 2 months, the latest today. That leaves one window left, I am now sure it will break within a month. POS. I shelled out about $2500 to dealer so far to fix these. They acted all sympathetic and never let on this is a known problem. I will paint the story on the side of this truck and park it in front of dealer. I am royally pissed. I paid $35K for this Lariat truck that is well maintained with 60k on it.

MY 2003 Expedition has had (3) regulators go in the 5 years I've owned the vehicle. My dealership has told me each time that this, "rarely happens". I find that hard to believe since for the $45K I spent on this truck...I shouldn't have (3) windows fail. FIRST TIME was in 2004 - warranty, (frt Drivers) and I had to drive over 20 miles to get to a dealership just to tape up the window because it was raining & I had my 2 yr old son and 6 month old daughter in back. SECOND TIME was in 2007 when the rear passenger went and it cost me $354, ($216 of which was labor). RECENT TIME was 10/17/09 and I have an appointment for tomorrow, Monday. Guess it'll cost me another $400. Since March 2009 the frt passenger has been making noises & I brought it to the dealership & they claimed the track was filled with dirt & belt moldings - however it still makes noise. Guess that will become the FORTH incident. This was our 2nd Ford truck, (we had a '93 Explorer before buying this '03 Expedition). Don't even get me started about the 11 times I took my truck to Ford for the factory installed moonroof leaking (Exped) AND the A/C problems on the Explorer. My husband & I have vowed never to buy another Ford.

John  says:

Hey, look up the same problem with Buick. I paid $515 to have the window regulator replaced. Two months later a second one went out. Two years later the third one went and it has not be raised or lowered more than 35 times. GM could not care less. They say all manufactiurers use the same type of window regulators and they all have problems. I don't believe it.

Wow John really? I had no idea this was happening on Buicks too. Good to know.
