Ford Recall

Ford recall

A product recall is a request to return to the manufacturer of a lot or a total production run of a product, usually due to the discovery of security issues. The recall is an effort to limit liability for corporate negligence (which can cause costly legal penalties) and to improve or avoid damage to publicity. Recalls are costly to a company because they often entail replacing the recalled product or paying for damages caused in use, albeit possibly less costly than indirect costs following damage to the brand and the decline in confidence the manufacturer.

The laws of a country's consumer protection have specific requirements regarding product recalls. These rules may include the amount for which the manufacturer will have to bear, situations in which a recall is compulsory (usually because the risk is quite large), or penalties for failure to remember. The company can also initiate a voluntary recall and may be under the same rules as if the withdrawal was mandatory. In the case of a mandatory retirement, consumers who can not dispose of it or return it to the manufacturer for replacement or refund could be fined up to $ 5000.
Ford issued the largest recall in its history as the driver of another 4.5 million vehicles were alerted to a fire hazard of a faulty switch.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was the withdrawal of sessions, with a total of 16 million Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) vehicles on the cruise control deactivation switch manufactured by Texas Instruments (TXN, Fortune 500) .

The faulty switch can leak hydraulic fluid, overheating, smoke and then burned, and risk of causing a fire, even when the engine is off, parked and unattended, the agency said.

The risk rises to 1.1 million Windstars that were the subject of a government investigation, said Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood.

"We determined with the government that there is a low risk of fire to vehicles," said Sherwood. "The other 3.4 million other vehicles are vehicles that have the Texas Instrument switch, so we're reminding reassure customers and prevent future recalls."

Sherwood added that Ford has always gone beyond recall only cars that are at risk.

Although the company does not treat its current suppliers, Sherwood said that Ford vehicles do not use the Texas Instruments in the post-2003 models.

NHTSA said Ford drivers should look for warnings of possible impending fire, malfunctioning cruise control systems and brake lights and ABS and warnings from the brake light on the dashboard. The safety agency also said that the difficulty in getting the vehicle out of park mode should be treated as a warning.

"I urge customers to heed this warning and bring the affected models to have them repaired as soon as possible," said Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, in a statement.
Ford is notifying customers and teaches them to take the vehicles to dealers for free installation of a fused wiring harness to eliminate the risk of fires, NHTSA.
