Foreign Movies with English Subtitles that are Still Worth Watching Anyway.
74Ah, when I saw that request I felt excited. I love foreign language films, especially French and German ones (I'm sorry if you think I'm unpatriotic). Personally, I feel that Americans miss out on a lot when they avoid films with subtitles. It's understandable why a lot of Americans are scared of foreign language films...it's not what you're used to and, hey, we have hollywood right smack in the golden state (California). That sets the bar pretty high. Do foreign films have good storylines? Do they have any good side affects? Would I be interested in the subtitles? Ok, I admit, subtitles are a bit annoying for me as well since I prefer to watch the screen. But if you dive into the deep end of the film pool, you might resurface envigorated.
Anyway without further ado, my list:
1. "Au Revoir Les Enfants!"-This is a very touching tale of how WWII affect young kids in France, especially those hiding Jewish friends from the Nazis. This film is very funny, very suspenseful, very engaging.
2. "Trois Hommes et un Couffin." If you like three men and a baby you'll love the original, French version. See, the French are hiliarious and this version is more touching then the American version if you're looking for a tear jerker (ladies). Well, if you've seen the American version you'll know what it's about-young mother abandons her baby with her former boyfriend who lives with three guys who are initially not fit to babysit a cat, but with time end up being very good mothers (to their abhorrence since these three guys are very macho). I would have added a clip, but I couldn't find one with English subtitles, and I'm sure most of you don't want to hear it in French anyway. Sorry.
3. "Wings of Desire." Caution, this German film may be very annoying to those with short attention spans. However, if you have patience, read the poems that bookmark the film, and finish the film (this is very important because it's like a puzzle with many pieces that don't make sense when you connect them but makes a whole lot of sense when you fit that last piece in the puzzle), you'll fall in love with this intoxicating film which you'll recycle several times in your dvd. It's basically about finding true love and German reunification (between West and East Germany). If you like arty films from the late 80s, you'll love this one.
4. "Run Lola, Run!" If you like minimal subtitles and a lot of action (men), this hip German film is what you're looking for. In this film Lola has to run as fast she can to recover money stolen from her boyfriend, Manni, before time runs out and he is killed by his boss ( a mafioso of some sort). If you like a realistic portrayal of the nature of love in the hustle and bustle of modern existence, this is the film for you (ladies).

Thanks for commenting. Wouldn't it be nice if they had headphone that could translate the movie so you didn't have too look at the subtitles? Anyway, I'll certainly see if they have that movie on netflix. Cheers.
Nice and to the point. Good job on this. I added three of them to my Netflix. I'll hit you up for a refund on any of them I don't like. (lol).
Thanks Shades. I'm certain you'll love them all. Just remember to watch "Wings of Desire" all the way through-even connect the poems if you're good at interpreting poetry. Otherwise you'll be bored and I'll be paying up lol.
I'll make a note of that. I've read a few books like that, where you have to get to the end to see how amazing the whole thing is. I get it. Thanks again.
I hope you enjoy or enjoyed it Shades. By the way, if you're interesting in knowing the poem before hand it's on this website http://www.wim-wenders.com/movies/movies_spec/wing
Trois Hommes et un Couffin was a very successful film in France, it was one of the Césars winners back in 1985, one of the three prices was for best film.
I do certainly prefer the French original version to the American re-make.
Very good selection :)
Thanks Princessa. I laughed hysterically when I first so that that movie. French are awesome situational comics!
Super list and reviews. I need to give some of these a watch 'n' read.
Thanks. Yes, like I said, WOD is at first difficult to get into but it shows German's positive side. I mean after the nazi occupation.
I'm always trying to get my students to watch films that have been made earlier than 2000. We have a film literacy problem just as we have a reading problem. I am a Fellini fan with La Strada topping the list.
I think it's great that you're giving your students a solid foundation on film arts. I love arty and foreign language films as well as those produced by the hollywood factory. I also like films from any periods as long as the storyline is beautiful or tight at least. I'll watch La Strada and add it to this collections. Thanks for the tip and stay tuned.
1, 2, 3... 5?
Thanks for pointing that out BLSTR
Hi Writer Rider
I'm reading all your language related hubs today and I'm learning a lot.
The whole concept of watching foreign language films with subtitles is interesting. Especially if you know the two languages. However, sometimes I concentrate too much on how the film has been translated and start saying'That's not what he said', or 'I would have translated it differently...' much to the annoyance of those around me.
I haven't seen the ones you list but will definitely have a go! Thanks
The ones I listed are great especially Wings of Desire. I just love the way Wim Wenders makes a philosophical point utilizing color. Especially the scene where the film momentarily turns from black and white to color when the trapeze artist hangs down the swing. It's as if being a fallen angel (she wears an angel's costume) brings her back to life for a moment at least. It truly is an art film.

I really like foreign films. It can take a few minutes to get used to the subtitles at the beginning of the movie, though!
Run Lola Run is such a great film. Another really good one is Life is Beautiful.
Thanks for the reviews!
