Foreign Oil: We are Stupid

We just sit and wait for it to fix itself...

It would be great if we would sincerely try to get away from foreign oil. Both sides (right and left) say they believe in perusing it, but neither side really does anything about it. Instead of honestly doing something about it, they spend their time creating new ways to squeeze more money out of the American People (Cap & Trade, Special Light Bulbs, Oil Taxes, Oil Prices, etc.). Many of us are fairly naive and believe that just because we are going to pay some crazy new tax or have some crazy new bill that this means progress when in fact it means just the opposite. This only makes matters worse...

Our "leaders" do not want to fix the problem. They get far too many gifts, special events, trips, and money from the lobbyists to ever really sit down and solve the issue. There is no incentive for either side to cross to the other side of the isle, yet there is plenty of incentive that keeps them divided and divisive. Hence why we have to put up with hearing these ludicrous excuses on why one solution or another won't work. Well, here is a solution for you - Get er Done! We are giving billions and billions of dollars to people each month, and these people want us dead. They are using our own money against us. But we do nothing... hence, we are stupid...

If our politicians really care about energy, (and they should) then they should be a lot more open to do everything that is required. Hence why I question this altogether. Either the Government is even more corrupt than even I believe (which would have to be significant) or both the "terrorist Oil" and "Global Warming" arguments are a load of crock. If the Government really believed there was a terrorist element or a Global Warming issue steaming from this, then wouldn't they be more willing to do something about it... right? Things that make you go hmmmm...

Although this is a difficult issue, there is an ultra simple beginning to this. Allow drilling while holding the oil companies accountable. Ensure there will not be any spills. If we can get a man to the moon, we can figure out how to keep our land and animals safe while still drilling. The Democrats state that this little bit of extra drilling will not help. If the Democrats and their lobbyist Global Warming buddies don’t think it will help, then allow the Republicans and their Oil lobbyist buddies to drill anyway and prove them wrong. If the Oil Companies screw up and hurt the environment – fine them big time and donate the fine to the clean up and to the town closest located to the disaster. For every month it is not cleaned up, institute a new fine. This will make them clean it up right and clean it up quick. Put all of this in the contract as a condition to their drilling. Now that this silly argument is off the table, we can get down to other more difficult matters like creating and investing in inexpensive alternate energy.

The point here is that if the terror issue and the global warming issue is such a problem, you would think both sides would find it important enough to actually sit down and deal with the problem - not from the point of their own pocket book, but rather from the point of view of a concerned American Citizen. I find how our Government treats this problem disgusting. It is very easy to start taking small steps to solve this, yet both Democrats and Republicans are fighting and not budging in order to protect their money and their lobbyist pals. It is disheartening that our country is getting ripped apart by something that is so easy to begin. It is disheartening that we actually have Americans in this country (lobbyists and Politicians) that think that lining their own pockets come before the security and safety of the American citizen.

There is so much at stake here, yet no one does anything... Is it that our politicians are just stupid and near sighted, or is it that we are stupid for allowing this continual cycle of electing these same people, with the same agendas, with the same lobbyist buddies.  I guess we just don't want to change... We are stupid...

Simple it's easier and cheaper to import it,and it gives the government an excuse to keep troops in Iraq and Afganistan.

All we have to do is wait until the price of "foreign" oil goes up. Then we'll stop buying it and get our energy from elsewhere. It's letting the people who have a vested interest in keeping the oil going as long as they can that are the ones who are really to blame.

It's giving away control to other countries. It stinks. I agree we need to allow drilling anywhere there is oil available, with strict rules.

At the same time, we need to make solar and wind more COST EFFICIENT so the general public can afford it. These are proven technologies (although both are limited in where they can be used). But here in AZ, solar is a VERY good solution.

The problem is that if you have solar panels on your house, nobody makes money from you every month. There is no lobbyist fighting for solar or wind, because the energy companies have WAAAYYYY too much $ to lose by making it more accessible.

If you could make fuel for your car from your garbage, who would make $ off that? Nobody. So it won't happen.

There comes a time when you have to $hit or get off the pot. Whether you believe in "global climate change" or not, everyone knows our energy reserves are limited. So we need to find a way to use less of our reserves NOW.

Well said! :) I looked into the cost of Solar Panels and they wanted 20,000 dollars. Prior to all of this energy craziness, you could get Solar Panels a lot cheaper. They are increasing all of the costs significantly now that it is desired... This only helps the energy companies and does not help the country as a whole. The priorities are all wrong... :(
