Forms of Government

There is a lot of confusion about where different forms of government fall within the political spectrum. I have seen this confusion all over the forums and in individual posts on various hubs.

So, to set the record straight . . . .

From Left to Right -

Totalitarianism • Communism • Nazism • Fascism • Socailism • Democracy • Republic • Anarchy

The further Left, the more government control, the further Right the less government at all.

On the very far Right is Anarchy - no government.

On the very far Left is Totalitarianism - total government.

The phrase "Right-wing extremist" is a fallacy. There is no such thing because there is nothing that far right to be extreme about. You can shout "leave me alone" but that's not what I would call "extremist".

Left-wing extremist, on the other hand, is, and can be a truism, in that there are those who want total government control. Some who want to rule eveyone and some who want to be ruled completely.

There is no such thing as right-wing fascism, right-wing nazism, right-wing totalitarianism. These are ALL on the left.

If you find Republicans who want to control you through intrusive legislation then you are looking at a RINO - Republican In Name Only. They are not on the Right, but on the Left.

It doesn't matter if they're called Democrats or Republicans, their actions show them to be either controlling and intrusive, or hands-off and respectful of your rights.

I also believe that there are many who call themselves Democrats and Liberals whose beliefs are actually right of center. They don't want government control and intrusion into decisions that they can very well make for themselves.

The Fine Print

If you plan on posting here to refute what I've said, please back up your claims with hard facts and not media talking points. I could care less what Chris Matthews or Glen Beck say. And by hard facts I mean historical reference and proof.

Proof? Yes. Each form of government operates using certain principles. If you do not know what those principles are, and can not back up your assertions using said principles, you will be outed as a hot-air relation. To avoid such embarrassment, and to the enjoyment and clarity of all posters, please do your homework. Thanks.

Respectfully, you forgot one. An Oligarchy, Insert Between Fascism and Socialism

An Oligarchy is defined as “a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dominant class or clique; government by the few.” This is the type of government the Framers feared and specifically wrote the Constitution to prevent.

Unfortunately it appears our present administration and many in our congressional representation believe in this form of government and are “nudging society in this direction.

“Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.” Quoted from President Ronald Reagan

Madame, I enjoy reading your Hubs, the only comment I care to make is that very few stand firm in their beliefs, so the true definitions don't hold much water, especially in the current administration.

Madame X profile image

Madame X  says:

jiberish - I agree, few hold firm, but that does not mean that words and terms do not hold THEIR meaning, no matter how confused anyone may get. I feel that it is necessary to reiterate the true definitions of these terms precisely because so many are confused - or pretend to be anyway ! Thanks for your comment.

Good work X.

It is funny how the libs try to pin the fascist name on conservatives. As you accurately point out, conservatives want less govt and less govt intervention in our lives. While the libs want almost total govt control, as we are now seeing.

lo---good one X---check out mu hub: obama the centrist.

I've been busy trying to get my useless congressman out from under his desk to have a town hall. He didn't, now he couldn't get out of town quick enough.

Now Obama creates this mess with the school speech and a lesson plan from the federal board of education instructin teachers what to do in their class. Does anyone doubt me now that these are government schools and it's time for vouchers.

Have a good weekend X

I don't know how I missed this Hub two weeks ago. But I'm glad I read it now. As always—you have it right. Or maybe I should say correct. :)

Thanks James - I just got fed up with the lack of education of some. But you know, it's more than that, they don't want to know, even when you remark on their error. Almost as if they're shouting inside of themselves 'you can't be right'. Yeah, then that would make them wrong . . . can't have that now can we.

Kebennett1 - thank you for reading my humble efforts. It all comes down to tactics for me, and some tactics raise the red flag to the top of the pole. As soon as I see someone using these tactics I know that their motives are other than their stated ones. Just a thought :)

Good points Madame X. James A Watkins and I had a discussion about the misuse of political terms a few weeks back. Most folks use them without knowing what they actally mean. In most cases they are used as a pajoritive to marginalize the opposition. As far as the order goes I would flip flop facism and socialism, but that's just an opinion. To me a "Right-wing extremist" is a person who leans towards a Jefersonian form of government. Of course if you oppose these ideas you call them "Right-wing extremist" because Jefersonian just sounds too patriotic!LOL Great Hub!

Madame X profile image

Madame X  says:

CJ - yeah, most people use them as a pejorative - or just to get under your skin :) Then again, some people have fully bought into the memes of their redefinition which is the scariest of all. God forbid some on the left should be actually *gasp* on the right in their true beliefs! Thanks for your insightful comments :)

'Tis a good hub! Eh? This is a topic one could elaborate on for several hours. It is quite enough for any person that cared would take time and educate themselves on these points.

I fear most just want their desires delivered to them.

I like just being left alone when it comes to government.

Madame X profile image

Madame X  says:

50 Caliber - I agree completely, most people just want their desires fulfilled and they don't really care how - even at the expense of others. And yeah, I just want to be left alone to live my life. I don't think that's too much to ask, especially since that's what this great country of ours was founded upon. Thanks for your insightful comments :)

Madame X,

You have rightly analyzed forms of Governments. All forms of Governments exist even today in this or that way.

N.B. You can send picture of Cat's Eye as you mentioned in comment on my hub.

Thanks and thumbs up!

Jyoti - Thanks for your accurate observation - yes, they all exist. The only problem is that we don't want all of them to exist here in America :) Thanks for commenting.
