If you are looking for Fort Worth car insurance, before finding a quote, either online or from your local car insurance agents, it can be helpful to know what the minimum car insurance requirements are for the Fort Worth area so that you can try to stay as close to the minimum coverage as possible. You should also be aware of all the insurances available.

When you are shopping for car insurance in Fort Worth TX. The only type of insurance that Texas requires you to have is liability insurance in the form of 25/50/25 (this is how you will see the numbers when you are shopping for car insurance). In other words, your must have at least $25,000 worth of bodily injury liability for one person in an accident, $50,000 in bodily injury liability for all people in an accident, and $25,000 in property damage liability. Keep in mind that liability coverage does not cover you (other people's liability coverage as well as insurances such as collision and Personal Injury Protection), but those around you. Bodily injury liability covers medical expenses, wage loss, and/or pain and suffering. Property damage liability covers damage done to other cars as well as fixed pieces of property such as fences, telephone polls, and bus shelters.

Although 25/50/25 is the required amount of liability coverage, is okay to only have the bar bones minimum worth of liability coverage when are are looking to save on car insurance Fort Worth TX? If you think that you'll have enough cash on hand to pay for damage done in serious accidents, you can afford to go with lower liability coverage. Because most of us aren't in that kind of a position, it is recommended that you have around 100/300/50 worth of liability coverage. Texas follows a tort system, which means that someone must be found at fault in an accident and pay the other party from their liability coverage. However, asides from liability insurance, there are other insurances to consider because you can be found at fault, in which case the other party’s liability coverage will not pay you for your car repair costs or medical expenses…

Collision coverage: Almost always required when you finance or lease your vehicle. It covers damage done to your car regardless of who was at fault in the accident. Sometimes there are disputes over who was the guilty party in an accident. With collision coverage you know for sure that your car will be fixed.

Comprehensive insurance: Usually bundled with collision insurance and is usually required when you finance or lease your car. It covers any damage to your car that occurs from things such as the weather, wildlife, or theft. In other words, any non-car accident damage or loss.

GAP (Guaranteed Auto Protection) insurance: Only applies if you car is stolen or irreparable. It covers the difference between how much money your car insurance company will give you and how much you still owe to the loan company. I explain it in depth in Bakersfield Car Insurance: Some Tips.

Uninsured/underinsured: Covers you, your passengers, and family members. Because a lot of drivers have either no insurance or just the minimum, this type of insurance is recommended. In Texas, two kinds of uninsured/underinsured coverage are available. One of them applies to bodily injury, which pays medical expenses, wage lost, and/or pain and suffering. The other applies to property damage, which pays for damages done to your car. If you have collision insurance, uninsured/underinsured property damage coverage is likely not necessary.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Covers you, your family, passengers, and pedestrians regardless of who is at fault in an accident. It covers the medical bills, income lost (80%), and replacement services (it gives you an allowance to hire someone to do things which you can't do while you're injured).

The Texas Department of Insurance has a very user-friendly comparison guide, which allows you to get sample Fort Worth car insurance quotes for all three counties within Fort Worth (Tarrent, Parker, and Denton). You'll notice that rates can very wildly for the same search parameters, stressing the need to shop around when you get car insurance in Fort Worth. If you stop at one insurance company, there's a very good chance you'll get a better rate somewhere else. When getting rates from different companies, it is important to be aware of all the discounts, which you might be eligible for (check out Auto Insurance Discounters for a more detailed look on available discounts). Once you get some quotes from multiple companies, your local independent car insurance agent might beat the best quote you found because they can compare quotes from multiple companies and are aware of some discounts which you might have never thought of. Generally, an agent is independent if they have a business name that you’ve never heard of before. If that business has a big company name like “Geico”, they can only give you quotes from that one company.
