If you are tired of messy sponges that soak up makeup like a, well, a sponge, then it is time to seek out a good foundation brush.  Makeup artists understand the importance of using a great foundation brush.  However, they are not necessarily cheap and can easily cost as much as $50 dollars.
A foundation brush should be soft and gentle on your skin and should evenly spread foundation over your skin.

Why Foundation Brushes

Foundation brushes are a better choice than sponges because they:

  • make application foundation less messy
  • total coverage or spot application is easier because of their flat, tapered shape
  • work well with all types of foundation
  • create a more smooth finish as they allow the makeup to more equally cover the face
  • are easier to maintain a quality brush will last for years with proper care.

Things to Look For

One of the most important things to look for when selecting a foundation brush is it should be absolutely soft on the skin.  If the brush pricks or scratches your face, toss that thing back where it came from.  No brush should scratch you or hurt your face.

Next, synthetic fibers are actually better since foundations are usually in liquid or cream forms.  These fibers are easier to clean and feel great on the skin.

The tip should not be tightly tapered or the bristles too densely packed.  The handle shape should not be so bulky that it is difficult to slip into your makeup case.  Ideally it will be compact enough to slip into an evening bag for easy touch ups on the go.

Finally, a good foundation brush will not shed after washing.  Keep this tips in mind when shopping for a quality foundation brush and you will find a replacement for those messy sponges that will serve you well and last for many years to come.
