If you are an Internet buff, then you have probably heard of the term social networking and you have heard of such websites like multiply, facebook, friendster, etc. As the term implies, it is a group consisting of individuals who are looking for other individuals who might have the same interest as them.
Although this can be done personally, people find it more fun to do it online. Perhaps this is because they feel they can socialize more when they do not see each other in person. There are people who feel more confident socializing with people who they don't actually get to see face to face. Because of the amazing fast-growing number of memberships to these sites, it would perhaps be interesting to know the reasons why it has become an overnight phenomenon:
1. The major thing offered in these sites is friendship. People just hate the feeling of being alone and it is through this activity that they will never feel alone, even if they are in fact alone in their own homes. The idea of having someone to talk to online is just exciting, especially if it gives you a change to find friends not only from your place but from all over the world. It is definitely cool to learn a thing or two about the culture and way of life of people from other countries.
2. Creative individuals can actually use these sites as an avenue to promote their business. A few individuals are brilliant enough to use their profiles as a way to promote their products and services. Not bad though as there is a very large potential market from the people in their networks. It is even made easy since some members actually search for things that interest them through the profiles of other members, so they can add them to their networks and perhaps share an idea or two about their interests later on.
3. Some people love the idea of being popular. For a lot of people, these networking sites have actually become a place of competition, where the more friends you have in your contacts the more popular you become. Well at least if they can't achieve popularity in reality, they can get it virtually. 4. Some sites offer a feature where members get to post URLs of their websites from their personal blogs to their businesses. It is one feature that businessmen enjoy the most since it gives them a very good venue to promote the products and services they offer.
Being a phenomenon, social networking also have risks involved. Those who participate in these sites have to be very cautious and guard themselves from impersonators and predators. This is the reason why minors are not allowed to join these sites since they usually do not have the capacity to sense an impending danger.
