Four Tips To Stop Nighttime Snacking
61Like many people, nighttime snacking might be one of the hardest parts about sticking to a diet.
Usually people, for the most part, do quite well during the day time hours and on weekdays, but when evenings hit - or on the weekend, problems arise.
Regardless of whether you're eating out of boredom, loneliness, or some other reason, getting control of it will be paramount if you hope to maintain your current weight or experience a weight loss.
Here are four simple tips that might help you achieve this.
Brush Your Teeth After Dinner
One very easy thing you can do that will help reduce evening snacking is immediately brushing your teeth after dinner.
If you do this often enough, it will send a signal to the body and mind that ‘eating time' is over and the freshness in your mouth will help reduce cravings for food.
Most of the time when you do have a minty taste in your mouth you won't experience the desire quite so much for food, so make sure it is a mint toothpaste that you opt for.
Go For A Walk
The simple act of a ten minute walk can really help improve the overall night-time snacking issue.
Studies have shown that those people who engage in physical activity - particularly in the time right after, tend to be a little more careful with their food choices. The reasoning being they often don't want to ‘eat back' what they just burned with exercise.
While you don't necessarily want to get into a ‘burn off what you eat' mindset as that can lead to distorted eating behaviors, if exercise does make you want to choose healthier food selections, this can be very powerful for your evening eating.
Call A Friend
The next thing to consider is calling a friend. It's preferable to do this over the phone than go visit because even though you may not realize, it's a lot more difficult to understand someone eating over the phone than when you're in person.
So, by being on the phone, you are preventing yourself from eating at the same time.
Keep Your Hands Occupied
Finally, the last way to stop night-time eating is to simply keep your hands busy. Some people choose to take up needlepoint, some women may pain their nails, and others will elect to iron or do other household chores.
Anything that keeps your hands away from your mouth and busy will work.
So, next time you're assessing your diet and are realizing that night-time eating is something that could be putting a dent in the amount of fat loss you're experiencing, keep these points in mind.
Everyone does struggle from time to time with this, so if it just happens every now and then, try not to worry too much. If it's happening nightly though, or more than once a week, you may want to try and figure out the underlying causes and come up with a solution to prevent it from occurring.
